HISTORY OF WEST OZ 1/4 SCALE SPEEDWAY ASSOCIATION.
RICK TRIPLETT - INAUGURAL PRESIDENT
Rick & Heather Triplett lived for 1/4 scale speedway and the West Oz Association in the early days of its establishment.
As a Limited Sprintcar racer in Esperance and a 1/10 scale model fan in Kalgoorlie, Rick was a speedway fanatic.
He was reading through a speedway magazine one day back in the early 2000’s and saw an article about a Sydney 1/4 scale racecar builder named Terry Bennett. Bennett is a fabricator and he and his brother constructed Midget Speedcars back in the Sydney Royale speedway days. Bennett started building 1/4 scale cars.
It wasn’t long before Rick had started creating his own chassis and fitted a chainsaw motor. He purchased a lathe and started milling gears and other parts. Rick remembers "The first guy I met in the 1/4 scale scene in WA was Peter Nanos, who had a 1/4 scale Sprintcar and he knew a guy named Les Blechynden with the same passion."
The Triplett’s relocated to Waroona with his job as a diesel fitter. After a few meetings between the 3 enthusiasts the search was on for some land to create a track. Rick had been to the Waroona Shire and was directed to the defunct Waroona Speedway track, with the possibility of creating his dream of an RC Sprintcar circuit.
A piece of land near the speedway track became the new West Oz circuit and the start of the WOQSSA, the association that we know so well today. Rick remembers the effort that was put into creating this venue and the assistance he received with machinery from Charles Hull Contracting in Waroona.
Les was a huge help with the sheet metal fencing and Rick, Heather & Les worked tirelessly to construct the venue.
The word was out...and new 1/4 scale fans were getting involved. Names like John Alford, Jim Connolly, Peter Loftus, Jeremy Briggs, Dale Pyke and Ian Archer helped create the circuit.
“The association was established, and racing started; however, it was not a long-term venture for us” said Rick. “As we all know, the venue was reclaimed, but we were able to secure the current location at Henderson. The amount of blood, sweat & tears committed to the Henderson site is a credit to everyone associated with its construction.
My wife Heather did a remarkable job as canteen manager, merchandise coordinator, and lap-timer. Heather has great assistance from Maxine and Chris Anderton and Sue Blechynden in the early days at Henderson. Actually, Heather was the inaugural lady racer at West Oz, driving an R & H (Rick & Heather) built Late Model Sedan.
Congratulations to each and every person who has played a part in creating the wonderful Henderson venue. I am so proud that Heather and I played a role in what we have today at West Oz”.
Rick was the inaugural President of the association from 2005 until 2008.
His passion for the sport has never waned. Rick tries to attend the racing whenever he can; however, his work commitments prevent him from regularly visiting the venue he helped establish over 20 years ago.
The association is indebted to Rick & Heather Triplett for their commitment to the sport that we enjoy today.

The biggest meeting of the year for UHROC is fast approaching and I can’t wait for it. We also can’t wait to see a good field of the mighty 1/4 scale Sprintcars hit the track and showcase what they’re about. We already have some big hitters entered, with former champions and the pro builder of them.

If you haven’t seen 1/4 scale Sprintcar’s race before and want to come on out and watch them put on a show, it’s free to watch and they won’t disappoint you. They are awesome to watch looks just like the real thing only smaller.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our club throughout this season. Without each and every one of you, we would not have the amazing track, atmosphere, and community we are proud to call ours.

This season has seen records broken, friendships formed, and many memorable moments both on and off the track.

As the season now comes to an end, our focus will shift towards:

1. Our upcoming Awards Night a night dedicated to celebrating you, our members, and recognising the achievements of the season.

2. Our AGM, which provides members the opportunity to:

a) Re-elect the Chair and Vice Chair, who will both be re-nominating for their positions.
b) Vote in a new committee for the upcoming season.

Please remember, your vote is yours alone, and the outcome can only be decided by you, the members.

While this season has presented its challenges, it is important to acknowledge the processes and procedures implemented by the current Executive Committee, which have provided greater clarity, structure, and direction moving forward.

Once again, thank you to each and every one of you. Your support, dedication, and passion have all contributed to the success we have seen on the track this season.

Kind regards
Lidia
Chairman

See you all track side.
