Honest question, do you actually know what oil goes in your car? 😅

Because "whatever was on special at Repco" is the wrong answer.

Every engine is built around a specific oil type and viscosity. Chuck the wrong one in and you're looking at:

👎 Stuff wearing out faster than it should
👎 Engine running harder than it needs to
👎 Worse fuel economy
👎 Potentially kissing your warranty goodbye

And if you're running a work ute that's loaded up most days, this matters even more. More weight, more heat, more strain on the engine. The right oil is doing a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes.

If you've got a work ute that's always carrying tools, equipment, materials, sometimes even sand or heavy gear for the job? All that extra weight adds up over time, and it'll wear your vehicle down way faster than a normal car.

A few things worth keeping an eye on:

👍 Know your GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) — basically the max weight your vehicle's allowed to carry once it's fully loaded. Go over that regularly and you're putting a lot of extra strain on your brakes, suspension, the lot.

👍 Get your brakes serviced regularly. More weight = more work for your brakes, every day.

👍 Don't skip logbook servicing. A lot of people wait until they hear a weird noise before booking anything in, but by then it's usually already a bigger (and pricier) job.

👍 Check your tyre pressure often, especially if you're carrying heavier loads. It makes a real difference to handling, safety and how long your tyres last.

“If I don’t go to the dealership, I’ll lose my car warranty”.
Absolute rubbish.

As long as your mechanic:

👍 Is fully qualified
👍 Follows the manufacturer’s schedule
👍 OE or equivalent quality parts and fluids
👍 Documents the services and stamps your logbook

Then you’re safe under the Australian Consumer Law and they cannot void your warranty for choosing a qualified independent mechanic over a dealership. It is common for dealerships to give you a promised capped logbook service pricing, but that doesn't mean you're locked into them.

You don’t have to choose between convenience and keeping your warranty.
