BMW calls the fluid in this ZF 8 speed auto “lifetime”, but that really means the life of the warranty, not the life of the car. ZF, who build the gearbox, recommend changing the fluid and filter at around 8 years or 80,000 to 120,000 km.

On this gearbox the filter is built into the sump pan, so the whole pan gets replaced. The fluid level is then set with the engine running and the fluid at the correct temperature, read off a scan tool. Get that wrong and you end up with harsh or delayed shifts.

If your BMW is coming up to 80,000 km and the gearbox has never been touched, it’s worth doing before any problems show up.
