What communication-access commitment could your team, organisation or community make?

Choose something specific enough to put into practice and review.

For example:

We will share meeting agendas two working days in advance.

We will add written and chat options to every team meeting.

We will check AAC access at the beginning of every appointment.

We will provide an alternative to telephone contact.

We will review our feedback process with people who communicate in different ways.

Complete the sentence:

This October, our communication-access commitment is [ADD ONE SPECIFIC CHANGE].

We will review it on [DATE] with [PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THE CHANGE].

What makes a workplace communication accessible?

It is more than responding to individual adjustment requests after someone encounters a barrier.

Communication access can be built into:

-recruitment and interviews

- everyday meetings

- staff training

- customer service

- feedback and complaint processes

- written procedures and templates

A communication-accessible workplace does not rely on one way of speaking, processing or responding.

Our latest article explores practical changes that can improve participation for employees, candidates, customers, contractors and visitors.

What does inclusion look like in everyday practice?

A space can meet an access standard while people still face barriers when booking, understanding information, communicating or joining in.

That’s why compliance, accessibility and best practice need to work together.

Compliance asks: “Are we meeting our obligations?”

This means following the laws and standards that apply to our setting. These duties can include physical access, non-discrimination and reasonable adjustments.

Accessibility asks: “Can people actually use it?”

Can people find and understand information, move through the space, communicate in their own way, make choices and participate? This includes physical, sensory, communication, digital and social access.

Best practice asks: “How do we build inclusion into the way we work?”

It means planning for access early, making decisions with people with disability, supporting staff and using feedback to keep improving. Individual adjustments remain important.

Think about a community event. Inclusion involves the whole experience: booking, arriving, understanding what will happen, taking a break, participating and having a say about what could improve.

At The Inclusive Movement, we bring lived experience and professional knowledge together to help organisations make practical changes.

Our consulting can support you to review spaces, communication and systems, develop a clear action plan, and equip your team with training and resources.

You don’t need to have all the answers before reaching out. We are currently taking enquiries for 2027 projects.

Tell us about your workplace, school or community setting and what you’d like to change. Let’s make inclusion work in your setting.

Visit our website to explore our consulting services or send us a message to start the conversation.
