NOBODY tells you how much goes into this π
When I started Hectic Details, I thought it'd be simple. Wash cars, get paid, repeat. I was wrong. Here's what I've learnt so far while juggling uni and running a business at 18:
1οΈβ£ RELIABILITY IS EVERYTHING
I used to think the quality of my work was what mattered most. It matters, but showing up on time and doing what you said you'd do matters more. Clients forgive a lot, but they don't forgive being let down. If I say 9am, I'm there at 8:50.
2οΈβ£ PHOTOGRAPH EVERY CAR BEFORE YOU TOUCH IT
This one could save you thousands. Before I start any job, I walk around the whole car and take photos and videos of every scratch, dent, chip, scuff and stain, inside and out. It only takes a few minutes, but it protects you if a client ever says "that wasn't there before." Without proof, it's your word against theirs. With photos, there's no argument. Bonus: those same before shots make the after look even better on socials πΈ
3οΈβ£ CHARGE WHAT YOU'RE WORTH
When you're young, people assume you'll be cheap. I undercharged at the start because I just wanted the work. All it did was burn me out. Now I price based on the time, products and skill that go into every job, and the right clients respect that.
4οΈβ£ WORD OF MOUTH BEATS EVERYTHING
Look after one client properly and they'll tell their mates, their family, their workmates. Some of my best bookings came from someone saying "just message Manav" π
5οΈβ£ IT'S NOT ALWAYS FUN
Early mornings, late nights, washing gear after a long day, studying for tests between jobs. Nobody posts that part. But every time a client sees their car at the reveal and their face lights up, it's worth it.
I'm still learning every day, and I'm grateful for every person who's backed a young local business π
If you made it this far, drop a π in the comments. And if your car needs some love, Hectic Details is servicing Sydney-wide.
