Docking tip: secure your pivot point..
This is one of the key things we teach during on-water training. When docking a houseboat, the goal is not perfection. It’s patience, teamwork, and one clear step at a time.

The first job is to get one line safely secured. Most of the time, we start with the bow. Once that line is attached to the dock cleat, it becomes the pivot point.

From there, the captain turns the wheel toward the wall & gently puts the motors in reverse, which brings the stern in. Final adjustments can be made once you are connected to the dock.

Teamwork and communication go a long way when docking a boat. 😉
It’s important that everyone knows their job, pays attention to what’s happening around them, and is ready to adjust if things don’t go exactly according to plan. Because boating is definitely not a copy-and-paste activity.

Lock Talk: Lock 7 - Glen Ross

Where might you spend your first night on the Trent-Severn?

Lock 7 is one of our favourite possibilities if your crew wants to do a little more boating on arrival day.

Many guests make it to Lock 4, 5, or 6 on their first evening, and those are all great options. But depending on timing, lock traffic, and how everyone is feeling, the bottom of Lock 7 can be a lovely place to settle in for the night.

One of the best parts is the stretch between Lock 6 and Lock 7.

Once you’re through Lock 6, you still have about 1.5 hours of scenic cruising before you reach the bottom of Lock 7, with cottages, trees, quiet water, and that feeling that you’re properly into the trip.

A few helpful things to know:

👉 Lock 7 has the first swing bridge you’ll encounter on this route, so it’s good to allow extra time for the lock and bridge transit.

👉 There is no potable water at Lock 7, so top up earlier if needed.

👉 The top of the lock is a little more exposed to the road, while the bottom tends to feel more tucked away.

👉 It’s a good spot for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and stretching your legs after a day on the boat.

👉 There’s a small convenience store with Kawartha Dairy ice cream near the top of the lock, which feels like very important route-planning information.

Lock 7 is one of those stops that gives you a real sense of travelling along the waterway, especially if it’s your first day out.

Helpful, scenic, and ice cream-adjacent.

With gas prices being what they are, 😳 fuel costs are a fair thing to wonder about before booking a houseboat trip.

Our boats are powered by twin Yamaha 50 hp motors. Yamaha is known for their reliability and fuel efficiency,
which is exactly what you want when you’re meandering along the Trent-Severn at houseboat speed.

As a rough guide, our boats burn about 10L of fuel per hour of cruising.

So what does that look like?
👉 A trip to Campbellford and back might use roughly 130-160L of fuel.
👉 A longer trip to Hastings and back might use roughly 200-220L of fuel.

Actual fuel use varies depending on weather, current, how much boating you do, and how the boat is handled.

That’s one of the reasons we encourage slow, steady cruising. It’s better for handling, better for comfort, and easier on fuel.

Most common mistake?
Coming in too fast.
And oversteering.

A lot of new captains try to “drive” the boat into position. We actually coach people to do less steering and pay more attention to how the boat is naturally moving. From there you can use the throttle (in short bursts) along with the bow & stern thrusters to adjust your positioning.

Lock staff appreciate slow, steady approaches. Coming in calmly gives you time to line up with the wall, pass your lines around the cables, and settle the boat comfortably in position.

That’s also why we guide our guests through their first lock. It’s the best way to see how the boat responds and how the whole process works in real time.

Once you’re secured to the cables, the water rises or lowers with the boat until it matches the next level of the waterway.

Then it’s time to prepare for the next step - easing away from the wall and heading out when the gates open.

Every lock is a little different. Wind, current, and boat traffic can all play a role, so taking it slow makes everything easier for the whole crew.

How do bathrooms work on a houseboat?
Totally fair question, and one people are often curious about before their first trip.

Each of our boats has a real onboard bathroom, including a porcelain toilet, or “head” as it’s called on a boat. The toilets use a macerator pump, and each boat has a 600L black water holding tank that gets pumped out after every rental.

We also provide the toilet paper because we know what works best with our system. And for the record, no, it’s not scary one-ply. We’ve actually had compliments on it, which may be one of our strangest but proudest hospitality achievements. 😊

A few other helpful details:

👉Once you’re docked overnight at many lock stations, the lock staff will provide access to the washrooms at the lock station.
👉We provide Cedar & Sage body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, which are natural and sustainable.
👉We also provide AquaTek Super Enzo, a septic treatment that helps keep everything fresh and working properly.

Like most things on a boat, the bathroom setup is a little different from home, but it’s straightforward once you understand it. And yes, we walk you through how everything works before you leave the dock.

Before you pack the whole house…
You may not need as much as you think.
One thing guests are often surprised by is how much is already included on board.

Our boats are set up with good quality everyday basics that make living on the water easier: linens, towels, kitchen gear, dishes, coffee supplies, bathroom basics, USB charging, and the little things people often forget.

So instead of hauling half your house to the marina, you can leave a lot of the “just in case” pile at home. Bring your food, drinks, clothes, personal items, and the people you actually want to spend time with. 😎

The goal is simple: less time sorting through bins at the dock, more time getting comfortable on the boat and easing into the trip.
