Ever wonder where the name Datsun came from? It’s a mix of history, wordplay, and a little bit of superstition!

The Investors: The “DAT” comes from the initials of the three original backers (Den, Aoyama, Takeuchi) who helped build the first car in 1914.

The “Son”: In 1931, a smaller car was created and named “Datson” to mean the “son of DAT.”The Rebrand: Because “son” sounds like the Japanese word for “loss,” they changed it to “Datsun” in 1933 to honor the rising sun and bring good luck.Plus, “DAT” sounds like datto in Japanese, which means “dashing off like a startled rabbit.”
