Zincs may not be the most glamorous part of a boat, but they play a critical role in protecting shafts, props, rudders, and other underwater metal components from corrosion.

The photos show heavy corrosion on the shaft and prop, which is exactly the kind of damage proper sacrificial anode protection is meant to help prevent.

In saltwater, sacrificial anodes quietly do exactly what their name suggests: they sacrifice themselves so more expensive parts do not.

Regular inspection and timely replacement of zincs is simple preventative maintenance, but it can save a lot of trouble and cost later.
