Global Young Academy Global Young Academy (GYA) - Providing a voice to young scientists and researchers around the world

The Global Young Academy was founded in 2010 with the vision to be the voice of young scientists around the world. The GYA empowers early-career researchers to lead international, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational dialogue by developing and mobilizing talent from six continents. Its purpose is to promote reason and inclusiveness in global decision-making. Members are chosen for their demons

trated excellence in scientific achievement and commitment to service. Currently there are 200 members and 134 alumni from 72 countries. The GYA enjoyed the support of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) from 2011 until 2016 and is now hosted at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle (Saale), Germany. The GYA received its seed funding from the Volkswagen Foundation and has since 2014 been funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and supported by IAP - the Global Network of Science Academies. The GYA has also benefited from project funding from a variety of donors and partners.

Could humanity create a new form of life? 🧬

🎙️ In the second episode of Science F⏩rward, the podcast of the UN Scientific Advisory Board, we speak with Board Member and Nobel laureate Thomas Südhof and synthetic biologist and GYA Co-Chair Yensi Flores Bueso about the idea of creating life from mirror versions of the molecules found in nature.

🧬 Mirror life does not exist yet, but the science behind it is advancing rapidly. Some researchers believe it could transform medicine. Others warn that creating a self-replicating organism unlike anything found on Earth could introduce challenges we are not prepared for.

🚨 What happens if humanity creates a form of life that is difficult - or impossible - to control?

Could it lead to new treatments for diseases like cancer and diabetes? Could it become one of humanity's greatest biological threats? And if we can create mirror life, should we?

Join us as we explore one of the most fascinating ideas in modern science, and why many scientists believe the conversation about governance needs to begin now.

Find out:
🧬 What "chirality" means and why it is fundamental to life
⚠️ Why some scientists say mirror life keeps them awake at night
🌍 What it means to make decisions about an innovation before it exists

Join us on 2 July for the GYA International Conference of Young Scientists Panel III "AI at the Core of Disciplinary Foundations in the Humanities and Social Sciences"
This session will explore how AI is pressuring the foundations of different research disciplines. Each panelist will present one disruptive question that AI has raised for their field, such as whether long standing methods remain necessary or how AI reshapes the kinds of questions researchers can ask.

Speakers include Vusumuzi Maphosa, National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Zimbabwe, Fatima Roumate, President of the IISR and Expert Group for the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, UNESCO, and GYA member Anina Schwarzenbach, Institute of Penal Law and Criminology, University of Bern.

Moderator will be GYA member Dr. Rima-Maria Rahal, Institute of Cognition and Behavior at Vienna University of Economics and Business.
