Yesterday, we were pleased to welcome visitors to our Leeds office for This Family Business, a special talk delivered by our archivist, Robert Curphey, as part of Heritage Open Days with Leeds Civic Trust.
Robert traced the story of the Vickers family from its roots in the latter half of the 18th century, through the founding of Vickers Oils in 1828 and across the generations that followed.
From Mary Randall Vickers and Benjamin Randall Vickers to Benjamin Threlfall Vickers, William Farrar Vickers, John Farrar Vickers and Peter Vickers, a strong sense of entrepreneurship runs throughout the family’s history.
Their readiness to recognise opportunities, embrace new ideas and respond to changing customer needs has helped the business adapt through almost two centuries of technological, industrial and social change, from developments in textile and marine lubrication to today’s environmentally acceptable and food grade lubricants.
The title 'This Family Business' was itself drawn from a history of the company written by Dr Benjamin Randall Vickers in 1953, making it a particularly fitting reflection on the people, ideas and values that have shaped the business.
Thank you to Robert for bringing this fascinating history to life and to everyone who joined us.
