As environmental awareness grows and fuel prices remain volatile, motorists are being reminded that some of the most effective ways to reduce emissions and running costs.

Buying an EV may be out of the question for many right now, but simply changing the way they drive can make a real practical difference.

Save the money in your pocket and save the planet at the same time.

Foot on the gas
Road safety and driver training experts say eco-driving techniques can reduce fuel consumption by 10% to 15%, lower emissions, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and improve road safety.

The advice comes as World Environment Day shines a spotlight on practical ways individuals can reduce their environmental impact, with the pre-17 driving school, Young Driver, revealing the green driving habits it teaches its pupils, instilling positive habits from a young age, and it may even rub off on their older siblings and even their parents.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, adopting fuel-efficient driving techniques can save the average driver up to 15% on fuel costs.

For a motorist covering 10,000 miles a year, that could equate to savings of several hundred pounds annually, depending on fuel prices.

Young Driver managing director Ian Mulingani believes environmentally conscious driving should form part of every driver’s education.

“Very few young people can afford an electric car and many can’t access reliable public transport, but the vast majority care passionately about the environment,” he said.

“All our lessons therefore teach students how to drive to reduce their emissions and we have switched our fleet to petrol hybrid cars that achieve over 60mpg.”

**Mastering the Dark: A UK Driving Instructor’s Guide**

* **The Hook:** Think driving at night is the same as the day? Think again—darkness completely alters your perception of speed and distance.
* **The Lesson:** This comprehensive guide highlights the stark contrast between dangerous habits and expert night driving. Blinding incoming traffic with full beams is a major hazard; you must drop to your low-beams early to preserve everyone’s vision.
* **UK-Focused Advice:** On UK roads, rain and poor visibility require you to double the standard two-second following rule. Check your mirrors constantly, signal early, and adjust your speed control so you can always stop safely within the distance illuminated by your headlights. True confidence comes from scanning for hidden hazards, like pedestrians or wildlife on unlit country lanes.
* **The Closing:** Drive defensively, stay alert, and ensure you make it home safely tonight.

Government sets new national walking and cycling targets backed by £4.5bn investment

The Government has unveiled ambitious new national targets to increase walking and cycling across England.

It is being backed by a £4.5 billion investment programme aimed at creating safer routes, new crossings and improved infrastructure over the next decade.

The Government wants the majority of short trips in urban environments to be completed by walking or cycling.

And breathe
New national targets aim to encourage people to move away from motorised transport to improve the environment, reduce pollution and improve health and fitness.

They form a key part of the Government’s wider transport, public health and environmental agenda, with ministers seeking to encourage more people to make everyday journeys on foot or by bicycle while reducing congestion, improving air quality and cutting carbon emissions.

Under the proposals, local authorities will be expected to support significant increases in active travel, with new funding allocated for dedicated cycle lanes, safer junctions, pedestrian crossings, school streets and improvements to local walking networks.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the investment would help create healthier communities and provide people with realistic alternatives to short car journeys.

Mind Matters
Why confidence is not competence behind the wheel - the psychology of young drivers and road safety
Published on June 11, 2026

As both a psychotherapist and a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM RoadSmart), I think we need to understand driving as far more than a technical skill.

Driving is psychological, relational and moral, and it tells us something about how a person manages impulse, frustration, risk, responsibility and awareness of others.

This is particularly important when thinking about new and young drivers.

DVSA has introduced another significant change to the driving test booking system.

Candidates are now limited to choosing from only their three nearest test centres when booking a practical test.

The move is the latest in a series of reforms designed to tackle long waiting times, reduce abuse of the booking system and ensure driving test appointments are allocated more fairly.

Where you are
Under the new arrangements, learners booking through the official DVSA system will only be presented with test centres closest to their home postcode, rather than being able to search freely across the country.

The DVSA says the change is intended to discourage speculative bookings and reduce the widespread practice of learners securing appointments at distant test centres purely to obtain an earlier test date.

For several years, learners have increasingly booked tests hundreds of miles from home before attempting to swap them for local appointments using cancellation-finding services or third-party booking platforms.

Critics argue this has distorted demand and made it more difficult for genuine local candidates to secure tests.

Changes to driving test booking happening today. ⚠️

From today (9 June), if you move your driving test, you can only move it to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where it's currently booked.

This is the remaining change we committed to make by the end of Spring 2026:

📅 31 March — test changes limited to 2 per booking

🔒 12 May — only learners can book, change or cancel their own test

📍 9 June — test moves limited to 3 nearest centres

Since 12 May, we've suspended 3605 accounts for breaking the rules and reported apps to app stores for removal. We're not stopping there.
