🚗 Today it was my turn to face the driving examiners...

After spending years helping learner drivers prepare for their driving tests, today the roles were reversed, and I was the one being assessed.

I'm incredibly proud to say that I passed the RoSPA Advanced Driving Test with a GOLD Award 🥇

A RoSPA Gold is the highest grade that can be achieved and recognises an exceptionally high standard of safe, systematic and defensive driving. The assessment isn't about showing off driving skills—it's about consistently making safe decisions, anticipating hazards early, planning well ahead and demonstrating excellent observation, judgement and vehicle control.

Advanced driving is all about reducing risk. It's about understanding what's happening around you, recognising potential hazards before they develop and always having a safe plan. These are the skills that help prevent collisions and make drivers safer for life.

For me, this achievement is about far more than gaining another qualification.

As a driving instructor, continually improving my own driving means I can pass those skills directly on to my learner drivers. The higher my own standards become, the higher the standard I can teach.

My aim has never been to simply help people pass a driving test.

My goal is to develop thinking drivers who can continue making safe decisions long after they've passed their test—reducing their risk of being involved in a crash and giving them the confidence to deal with whatever they face on the road.

Learning never stops, and I firmly believe that if I'm asking my learners to keep improving, I should be doing exactly the same myself.

From the moment she arrived at the test centre, Rio believed in herself. She stayed calm, kept her confidence, and trusted the skills she’d worked so hard to develop throughout her lessons. That positive mindset made all the difference, and today it paid off in the best possible way! 👏

Passing your driving test isn’t just about knowing how to drive – it’s about managing your nerves, staying focused, and believing that you can do it. Rio did exactly that, and I’m incredibly proud of everything she’s achieved.

I saw the devastating impact losing her son had on Crystal at a RoadPeace Charity event just a few months after the fatal collision which killed her son and it’s one of the reasons why I’m so passionate about road safety.

Young novice drivers are disproportionately represented in road death and road harm. 17-24 year olds account for only 7% of licence holders in the UK yet account for around 20% of killed or seriously injured on our roads.

I’m in full support of any form of graduated driver licensing if it protects young drivers, however I believe it starts with the training, it starts with the driving instructor.

How about we spend more quality time training these young drivers to be better thinking drivers and make safe choices.

I will never apologise for taking my time and not rushing any driver through their driver training if it means they’re better prepared for a lifetime of safe driving and they’re making safe driving choices which ultimately keeps themselves, their passengers and other road users safe.

Although Lucy completed the final part of her journey elsewhere, I was fortunate enough to be part of her driver training and to receive this lovely message after she passed.

Learning to drive can present different challenges for different people, and Lucy worked incredibly hard to build her skills and confidence behind the wheel. Receiving feedback like this reminds me why I love what I do.

If you’ve got a driving test coming up and you’re not quite sure whether you’re ready, it can be hard to judge your own standard.

A mock test is a good way to get a clear, realistic picture of where you’re at.

At RoadSmart Driver Coaching, the mock test is delivered as close to the real driving test as possible — same expectations, same level of independence, and the same focus on safe driving decisions that examiners are looking for.

It includes:

A full realistic driving test experience
Honest, structured feedback straight after the drive
A clear breakdown of strengths and areas to improve
An assessment based on real driving world standards

The goal isn’t to “pass or fail” — it’s to answer the question most learners are really asking: “Am I actually ready for my driving test?”

🚗 Why I Sometimes Say "You're Not Ready Yet"

One thing many learner drivers don't realise is that driving instructors are monitored by the DVSA based on the performance of their pupils taking driving tests over a rolling 12-month period.

If an instructor triggers certain performance indicators, they can be called for a Standards Check, where a DVSA examiner observes a live lesson and assesses the instructor against 17 different competencies covering lesson planning, risk management, and teaching & learning strategies.

That's one reason why responsible instructors won't send someone for a test unless they're genuinely ready — not just to pass the test, but to drive safely and independently afterwards.

I don't usually share my statistics, but I believe transparency matters:

✅ Pass Rate: 87%

✅ Average Driving Faults per Test: 2.21

✅ Average Serious Faults per Test: 0.07

✅ Examiner Intervention Required: 7% (1 test)

These figures aren't just about passing tests. They reflect the importance of preparing drivers for life after the test, where there is no examiner or driving instructor sitting beside them.

At RoadSmart Driver Coaching, the goal has never been simply to help people pass a test. The goal is to develop safe, confident, thinking drivers for life.

Before a learner driver takes a driving test with RoadSmart, they must be able to consistently drive independently for a number of weeks from the driving test and show that they are competent enough to drive on their own and deal with any challenging situations they are faced with, reflecting the ability to drive safe in the real world.
