Few could have imagined that the boy who grew up on a council estate in Telford, surrounded by poverty and uncertainty, would one day become the man entrusted with one of the greatest ceremonial duties in British history.

That boy was Warrant Officer Andrew "Vern" Stokes.

At just 16 years old, he joined the Coldstream Guards, searching for purpose rather than prestige. Inspired by an old family friend who had served decades earlier, he chose a path of discipline, service, and sacrifice—a decision that would change the course of his life forever.

Over the next three decades, Andrew Stokes became one of the British Army's most respected ceremonial soldiers.

He oversaw countless Trooping the Colour parades, planned State Visits attended by world leaders, and even travelled to the Pentagon to share Britain's expertise in military ceremonial planning. His exceptional service earned him the Royal Victorian Order after successfully planning the funeral of Prince Philip during the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2015, he accepted what many consider the pinnacle of ceremonial service: Garrison Sergeant Major of London—the King's Sergeant Major.

During Queen Elizabeth II's State Funeral, more than 17,000 members of the Armed Forces took part, with around 4,000 directly involved in the procession. Every pace, every salute, every perfectly timed movement witnessed by billions around the world depended on meticulous planning.

That responsibility rested on Andrew Stokes' shoulders.

While the world watched the pageantry, few realized there was one man quietly ensuring every soldier, sailor, and airman knew exactly where to stand, when to move, and how to honour a Queen they had sworn to serve.

He wasn't seeking the spotlight.

He was making sure history unfolded with absolute perfection.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Andrew once admitted:

"I sometimes have to pinch myself."

From a teenager with little hope for the future...
..to the soldier trusted to lead one of the most significant military ceremonies in modern British history.

His story is proof that a uniform can do more than change a person's career.

After being blown up by a su***de truck bomb in Iraq that killed a number of civilians while serving as an infantry soldier in the British Army, our proprietor Neil was medically discharged with an exemplary service record.

He then spent the next 10 years working at Leisuretrim in ponthir. A specialist automotive upholstery business established in 1990 by his late father John.

During this time he also qualified as a fitness instructor and took part in a many solo ultra endurance events and also wrote and published his own memoir which sold thousands of copies worldwide.

Following his father's death he left the upholstery world and then spent over 8 years working as a drayman delivering beer kegs.

February 2024 he established Hoods and Stitches and it was only intended to be a sideline recovering motorbike seats from a home garage while he continued to work full time on the beer deliveries.

Over several months the sideline started to grow to the point he was averaging 80 hours a week juggling both jobs and one would have to go.

February 2025, and just a year after establishing the buiness he resigned to run it full time.

It was closed today for customers and I was only there waiting for some fabric delivery's and customers still turned up.

Please don't make a wasted journey tomorrow. We will be open normal hours from Friday.
