Anxiety doesn't mean you're a bad driver...

You can be a perfectly capable driver and still experience driving anxiety.

Anxiety doesn't automatically mean you lack driving skills.

You might know the rules of the road, have years of experience and be perfectly capable of handling your car, yet still experience overwhelming fear when driving.

Sometimes it's the thoughts, feelings and worries surrounding driving that make it difficult.

At Drive Therapy®, we look beyond the driving itself to understand what's contributing to your anxiety and how you can work towards feeling more confident.

🚘 You don't have to be fearless to make progress.

Swansea named as one of the best cities to drive in UK! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Moneysupermarket has launched a new UK Drivability Report, helping motorists understand which parts of the country are easier and more challenging to drive in.

New data from MoneySuperMarket reveals that more than 8 in 10 UK drivers (81%) have chosen not to drive somewhere because they felt the journey would be too stressful or difficult.

To help drivers better understand local driving conditions, MoneySuperMarket analysed data for 58 UK cities, boroughs and local authorities, creating a new interactive tool that motorists can use to prepare for an upcoming journey.

They also surveyed 2,000 UK drivers about what they find most challenging about driving, before speaking with driving expert Carmine Mastrogiacomo at Drive Therapy® for practical tips for building confidence behind the wheel.

What does it take to overcome driving anxiety? 🚗...

Just like losing weight, getting fitter or learning a new skill, there are no quick fixes or super hacks that deliver lasting results.

Overcoming driving anxiety takes the right approach, the right support and a process that works for you.

Here are the key ingredients to help you move towards your driving goals with greater confidence:

✅ A Strong Motivator – Knowing why overcoming your driving anxiety matters to you.

✅ Commitment & Consistency – Taking small, manageable steps towards lasting change.

✅ Understandable Driving Anxiety Education – Making sense of driving anxiety and why it happens.

✅ A Reliable, Structured Process – Knowing what to do, how to do it and when to take the next step.

✅ Client-Led Coaching & Interventions – Working at your pace, with your needs and goals at the centre.

✅ A Personalised Driving Plan – A tailored approach that reflects your individual challenges and circumstances.

✅ Supportive Accountability – Helping you stay focused, motivated and on track.

✅ Ongoing Support, When Needed – Having the guidance and reassurance to keep moving forward.

The good news? You don't have to figure it all out alone. 🤝🏻

You bring the motivator and commitment. We'll provide the knowledge, tools, guidance and support to help you build confidence behind the wheel.

5️⃣ Signs you might be experiencing driving anxiety...

Does any of this sound familiar? 🚗

💭 You worry about driving long before you need to leave.
🚗 You avoid motorways, roundabouts or unfamiliar routes.
❤️ You experience a racing heart, sweaty palms or a feeling of panic behind the wheel.
👥 You feel safer when someone else is in the car.
🏡 You turn down invitations or opportunities because of the driving involved.

Driving anxiety isn't always obvious to other people. You might appear perfectly confident on the outside while feeling overwhelmed on the inside.

If you recognise yourself in these signs, please know that you're not alone.

There's support available, and you don't have to figure it all out by yourself 🤝🏻.

🚗💭 Does your mind make driving feel more dangerous than it really is?

Driving anxiety can turn one small thought into a whole chain of “what ifs”…

❌ What if I panic?
❌ What if I make a mistake?
❌ What if I lose control?
❌ What if something goes wrong?

That’s where CBT interventions can help. 🧠

Instead of automatically believing the anxious thought, PAUSE and challenge it:

👉 What’s the evidence?
👉 Am I assuming the worst?
👉 Has this actually happened before?
👉 What would I say to a friend thinking this?
👉 What’s a more balanced way of looking at it?

Try swapping:

❌ “I’m going to panic and something terrible will happen.”

for:

✅ “I might feel anxious, but I can handle the feeling. I can slow things down, use my coping strategies and take it one step at a time.”

💡 You don’t need to feel 100% confident before you drive.

Sometimes confidence comes after you start challenging the thoughts and facing the situations that anxiety tells you to avoid.

🚘 Challenge the thought. Change the response. Build your confidence.

From avoiding driving for 20+ years to navigating London roads 🚗.

Meet our client G...

For G, driving had become a source of intense anxiety. Even short, local journeys could leave them feeling panicked and in tears. Busy roads and unfamiliar routes felt completely out of reach.

But with the right support, things began to change.

The journey 🗺...
Through our Drive Therapy® Course, G worked with Carmine and Erika to understand their fears, develop strategies to manage their anxiety, and gradually push beyond their driving comfort zone.

The progress 📈...
Just three months later, G was regularly driving around London, tackling routes that had previously felt impossible.

As G explains:

“The difference is that now I am actually doing it.”

G is refreshingly honest that this wasn't an overnight transformation. They're still working on their confidence, and some journeys still feel daunting. But now, they have the tools to face those challenges rather than avoid them.

“Carmine has given me the tools and strategies to manage my fears and to keep on stretching my driving comfort zone.”

At Drive Therapy®, we know that progress isn't about never feeling anxious. It's about learning how to manage that anxiety and doing the things that matter to you, even when they feel difficult.

Thank you, G, for sharing your journey, and for trusting Carmine and Erika to help you get back on the road 🤝🏻.

If driving anxiety is holding you back, you don't have to face it alone. With the right guidance, support and a willingness to work through the process, change is possible.

Things people with driving anxiety say… 🚗

"I'll drive there… but I'll come back before it gets dark"

"I know I can drive. But I can't bring myself to do it"

"What if I take the wrong lane"

"What if someone gets angry with me"

"What if I get lost"

"I'll stick to my familiar route"

"What if I end up in a situation I can't cope with"

"What if there's no parking there"

"I'll drive if someone comes with me"

If you’ve ever thought any of these things, you’re not the only one 🤝🏻.

Driving anxiety can make situations that look completely manageable to other people feel overwhelming, even when you know you’re capable of driving.

And sometimes it’s not the driving itself that feels scary — it’s the “what ifs” running through your mind.

The good news? These thoughts can be worked on. You don’t have to avoid driving forever, and you don’t have to suddenly become a completely confident driver overnight.

You can build your confidence one journey at a time. 🌱
