🔴 When did you last actually read your breakdown policy?

Most annual breakdown policies auto-renew quietly. The payment goes out, the documents arrive by email, and most people do not open them.

The problem with that: cover terms change. The policy you have now may not be the same as the one you took out two or three years ago, even if you have been with the same provider throughout.

A ten-minute check of your current policy documents is worth doing before the summer driving season gets into full swing. The specific things worth checking: whether your spouse or partner is named, whether the vehicle age limits apply to you, what the recovery destination entitlement actually is, and whether home start is included or an extra.

If your policy does not hold up to that check, it is a useful moment to compare alternatives - autoaidbreakdown.co.uk

ℹ It's an easy thing to assume - and an easy thing to overlook.

If your spouse or legal partner is named on your AutoAid membership documents, they're covered. If they're not named, they're not.

It takes seconds to check. Download your membership documents from the AutoAid customer portal and look for their name on the schedule. If they're not there and you'd like them added, get in touch with us.

Better to check now than to find out when it matters.

Coming back to a car that has been baking in a car park for two hours is its own special misery. Here are a few tips that actually help.

Open one window, then open and close the opposite door several times to push the hot air out fast. Costs nothing, works immediately.

When you do turn the air con on, set it to fresh air first rather than recirculate. You want the hot air out before you start cycling it around.

A sun shade on the windscreen makes a genuine difference to the steering wheel and dashboard temperature. Worth keeping in the boot.

Those are ours. Tell us the tip your household swears by.

June grass pollen. Dirty glass. Worse than it looks. June driving can look bright and easy right up until the windscreen tells you otherwise.

Grass pollen peaks in June across most of the UK. It settles on glass, combines with road dust and motorway grime, and creates a haze that catches the low morning and evening sun at exactly the wrong angle. A screen that looks fine in overcast conditions can become genuinely difficult when light hits it directly.

Clean glass, a full screenwash bottle, and a microfibre cloth in the glovebox may not be a glamorous solutions - they are the right ones. If your wiper blades are leaving streaks rather than clearing the screen, they need replacing before the problem gets worse.

🚙Towing season is back. Check before you hitch.

Myth: Towing experience carries over automatically from one season to the next.

Fact: A caravan or trailer that has sat unused since last September may have developed tyre pressure loss, bearing wear, or brake issues you cannot see from the outside. Your tow vehicle has also been through a winter. Coupling up and driving away without checks is a risk, and one that contributes to a consistent spike in towing-related breakdowns in May each year. Jockey wheel, hitch lock, lights, tyre pressure, payload limit. All worth five minutes before the first trip of the season.

🔴 Does your breakdown cover include the caravan behind you?

Towing season is well underway and it is worth knowing exactly what your breakdown cover does and does not include when there is something attached to the back of your car.

Many standard breakdown policies cover the tow vehicle only. If the caravan or trailer itself develops a fault - a tyre blowout, a coupling failure, a wheel bearing going - the policy may not cover recovery of the outfit as a whole.

AutoAid personal-based membership includes cover for an attached caravan or small trailer as standard (check your exact caravan specs on the policy details). If you break down while towing, the recovery covers both the vehicle and whatever is hitched to it, to a destination of your choice.

If you are heading out with a caravan this summer and you have not checked what your current cover actually includes for the outfit, now is the right time to do it.

ℹ Breaking down is stressful enough without worrying about everyone else in the car.
If your breakdown happens more than a mile from home, AutoAid will recover you, your vehicle, and up to five passengers to any single UK destination of your choice.

That means the whole car, not just the driver. No one gets left behind, and no one has to sort their own way home.

It's the kind of cover that matters most when you're far from home with a car full of people.

Every summer there is one boot item that somehow becomes a permanent fixture.

A football. A picnic blanket. A bottle of water that has been there since May. A spare jumper. Something for the dog. Something that was meant to come out weeks ago.
Tell us the item that always seems to live there.
