This week, we introduce the founder of Weymouth Powerboat Training, Tim Anderton

RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor, Dinghy Trainer, RNLI Deputy Coxswain and SRC assessor

Tim began teaching powerboating after working for Sunsail in Greece and Turkey from 1998-2001, and continued through various roles, including working for the RYA in the Thames Valley and London region. Since then he has extensive experience using powerboats for dinghy coaching and more recently, full-time professional operations.

Tim was appointed by the RYA as a Dinghy Coach Assessor/Trainer and has spent the last 15 years training Dinghy Instructors and Senior Instructors, allowing them to pass their skills along to the next generation.

After moving to Weymouth in 2014, Tim joined the RNLI a year later and established Weymouth Powerboat Training in 2023. These days, he spends much of his time on the water, including skippering trips to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove for Weymouth Bay Rib Charter

With Weymouth Lifeboat, Tim became a helm for the Atlantic 75, now 85, in 2017 and Deputy Coxswain on the all-weather lifeboat in 2025. When he is not working, Tim is on call for Weymouth RNLI.

Since Tim launched Weymouth Powerboat Training in 2023, we have grown gradually and now deliver the full range of powerboat qualifications, from one-hour introductory sessions to advanced night courses. Alongside that, we run SRC, First Aid, PPR and Day Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory courses and, as of this year, the one-day RYA Radar course. We have also had the exciting opportunity to support projects for a range of research and development organisations, including work involving autonomous vessels, water testing and film production.

“Looking ahead, I am committed to establishing Weymouth Powerboat Training as a widely recognised and highly respected training centre, supported by a team of skilled and experienced instructors who are dedicated to delivering an exceptional standard of training to a broad range of clients.”

Following on from a powerboat course last week, the students on the course had this to say:

"My partner and I have just completed the Powerboat Level 2 course over two days with Tim. It is an absolutely brilliant course that we cannot stop talking about. We learnt so much in a short time, and it was all done at our pace; a perfect blend of theory and practice. Tim is a pleasure to spend time with: extremely knowledgeable, patient, calm and fun. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, but the coastline is so beautiful in the area that you would enjoy it at any time of year. We cannot recommend the course more highly; it is exceptional value for money and gives you practical, hands-on experience that feels priceless. It has ignited our passion for powerboats, and we look forward to completing more courses with Tim and the team."

Completed your Powerboat Level 2?

WHAT NEXT is the question that we frequently get asked. Some people gain their qualification for work, some because they have brought a boat but many people do their qualification for the experience and then have no specific plan for what to do next.

In our latest blog, we have a look at the various options, from gaining your ICC, getting your PB2 commercially endorsed, volunteering or just getting time on the water, there are plenty of opportunities.

If your looking for some ideas then this 2 minute read may offer a few options.

Introducing Lyle Stantiford - RYA Advanced Powerboat instructor, SRC assessor and Radar instructor

Lyle has over 30 years of powerboating experience, having first taken to the water at the age of eight on the family boat with his father.

He holds MCA Master 200GT and Officer of the Watch 500GT qualifications, and achieved his RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Commercial Endorsement at the age of 18.

At 21, Lyle started his own angling charter business, which he ran successfully for 14 years, operating trips around Dorset, Devon, and the Channel Islands.

Alongside this, he has given 20 years of service as a volunteer with Weymouth RNLI, where he has served as Coxswain, Helm, and Mechanic.

He also spent four years as a Coastal Lifeboat Trainer for the RNLI, specialising in all aspects of training, including boat handling in all weathers, onboard propulsion systems, water jets and outboards, as well as search and rescue, seamanship, and navigation.

Lyle is now an Area Operations Manager and brings experience across vessels ranging from 4 to 28 metres.

His broad operational background, combined with his specialist understanding of different learning approaches, makes him a highly capable and adaptable instructor.

In 2025, Lyle qualified as an RYA Advanced powerboat Instructor and does private tuition and own boat tuition allowing people to get the best out of their own boats.

Lyle regularly teaches RYA Powerboat level 2, Intermediate and advanced courses as well as running our SRC Courses for those wishing to use VHF radios. In addition to this, Lyle recently qualified as an RYA Radar Instructor and will be running our first course towards the end of the year

Looking to do your Personal watercraft proficiency course? (Jet skis to most of us!)
We are running this 1 day course on the 3rd July and have a number of spaces left.

Whether you want to have a go on holiday or buy your own machine, our Personal Watercraft Proficiency course will teach you how to get the best from it and stay safe on the water.
Many UK harbours require PW riders to hold an RYA qualification to launch. You may also need an RYA certificate or ICC if you want to use your PW abroad.

We have a number of places for shared ski where you share the ski with 1 other person. The course is accompanied by our powerboat so when not actively riding the ski, you wait on the powerboat unless you are with friends and family and then you are welcome to stay on the ski whilst the other person drives.

The course is run in conjunction with Jurassic Jetski Tours Ltd and their experienced instructors and top of the range Skis.

This week, as part of our focus on the team, we are introducing Clare, one of our Powerboat and SRC instructors.

Clare Elliott-Baker
Clare has been working full-time in the maritime industry for the last 15 years and has been around boats for much of her life.
During this time, Clare has focused on gaining experience and qualifications, including:
- Yachtmaster Offshore commercially endorsed skipper
- RYA Powerboat Trainer
- VHF/SRC instructor and assessor

Clare ran an RYA and MCA sea school for 10 years and now works freelance across the South Coast.
As part of this, Clare was also a test skipper for RIBCRAFT UK & Europe for 8 years and worked on many film and media projects for them.

Clare runs Powerboat Level 2 courses and radio courses for Weymouth Powerboat Training and, over the years, has received some excellent feedback.

"Loved every minute! The tuition and course content were spot on. The pace was well considered, and Clare is one of those rare experts who is also approachable and down-to-earth."

Outside of teaching, Clare has also been involved in all sorts of work on the water, including filming for TV and movies, deliveries, safety boat work, towing, and, of course, training. If that wasn't enough, Clare also recently restored an offshore racing yacht and successfully ran a Fastnet campaign.

Clare will be running a number of our courses through 2026 alongside running her own dog-walking business www.portlandpaws.co.uk

An amazing weekend for a Powerboat Level 2 course.
With the best weather of the year, a massive fair in the square and some great students it was always going to be a good course.
The feedback sums it up nicely though

My partner and I have just completed the Powerboat level 2 course over 2 days with Tim. It is an absolutely brilliant course that we cannot both stop talking about. We learnt so much in a short time and it was all done at our pace; a perfect blend of theory and practice. Tim is a pleasure to spend time with; extremely knowledgeable, patient, calm and fun. We were incredibly lucky with the weather but the coastline is so beautiful in the area that you would enjoy it any time of year. We cannot recommend the course more highly; it is exceptional value for money and gives you practical hands on experience that feels priceless. It has ignited our passion for powerboats and we look forward to completing more courses with Tim and the team.

Thanks to Kerry and Emma for this feedback. Makes it all worth while and we look forwards to seeing you back on the water soon when your friend buys a boat!!

For all those people thinking about learning to drive a boat or just getting a weekend on the water. Surely it’s worth giving it a go.
