This week, we introduce the founder of Weymouth Powerboat Training, Tim Anderton
RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor, Dinghy Trainer, RNLI Deputy Coxswain and SRC assessor
Tim began teaching powerboating after working for Sunsail in Greece and Turkey from 1998-2001, and continued through various roles, including working for the RYA in the Thames Valley and London region. Since then he has extensive experience using powerboats for dinghy coaching and more recently, full-time professional operations.
Tim was appointed by the RYA as a Dinghy Coach Assessor/Trainer and has spent the last 15 years training Dinghy Instructors and Senior Instructors, allowing them to pass their skills along to the next generation.
After moving to Weymouth in 2014, Tim joined the RNLI a year later and established Weymouth Powerboat Training in 2023. These days, he spends much of his time on the water, including skippering trips to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove for Weymouth Bay Rib Charter
With Weymouth Lifeboat, Tim became a helm for the Atlantic 75, now 85, in 2017 and Deputy Coxswain on the all-weather lifeboat in 2025. When he is not working, Tim is on call for Weymouth RNLI.
Since Tim launched Weymouth Powerboat Training in 2023, we have grown gradually and now deliver the full range of powerboat qualifications, from one-hour introductory sessions to advanced night courses. Alongside that, we run SRC, First Aid, PPR and Day Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory courses and, as of this year, the one-day RYA Radar course. We have also had the exciting opportunity to support projects for a range of research and development organisations, including work involving autonomous vessels, water testing and film production.
“Looking ahead, I am committed to establishing Weymouth Powerboat Training as a widely recognised and highly respected training centre, supported by a team of skilled and experienced instructors who are dedicated to delivering an exceptional standard of training to a broad range of clients.”
Following on from a powerboat course last week, the students on the course had this to say:
"My partner and I have just completed the Powerboat Level 2 course over two days with Tim. It is an absolutely brilliant course that we cannot stop talking about. We learnt so much in a short time, and it was all done at our pace; a perfect blend of theory and practice. Tim is a pleasure to spend time with: extremely knowledgeable, patient, calm and fun. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, but the coastline is so beautiful in the area that you would enjoy it at any time of year. We cannot recommend the course more highly; it is exceptional value for money and gives you practical, hands-on experience that feels priceless. It has ignited our passion for powerboats, and we look forward to completing more courses with Tim and the team."
