One questions we’re getting lately at Massbrook Driving School is:

“Do I need a licence for an e-bike, e-scooter or e-moped?”

And the answer is… it depends what you’re riding.

Some electric bikes need no licence at all, while others can legally be classed as an e-moped, meaning you may need an AM licence and IBT training before riding on public roads.

Another cracking few weeks of motorcycle test passes at Massbrook Driving School! Huge congratulations to:

A serious amount of hard work, practice, nerves, a few “did I just stall that?” moments, and plenty of determination went into these results. Passing the motorcycle test is no small thing, and every one of you earned it.

Some of these legends are pictured here, while a few from the last gang managed to escape the camera before we could grab a snap.

It’s always great seeing riders go from nervous starts to confident, safe riders out on the road. Fair play to every one of you.

Ride safe, enjoy the freedom, and remember… the learning doesn’t stop once the L vest comes off.

We’re thinking about doing something a bit different.

We’re exploring the idea of running a small Advanced Rider Development trip to northern Spain in October 2026.

Before anyone gets too excited, nothing is booked, nothing is confirmed, and we’re not selling anything yet. We’re simply putting the feelers out to see if there’s genuine interest.

The rough idea would be:

• Ferry from Rosslare to Bilbao
• A small pilot group (around 6 riders)
• One leading the training
• One to two support riders
• A mix of mountain road riding and beginner/intermediate gravel
• Hotel and guest house accommodation
• Meals included
• Riding your own bike

This wouldn’t be a “tour” in the usual sense. The idea would be a coached Advanced Rider Development experience with structured riding and skills work along the way.

Estimated cost would likely land somewhere around €2,500–€3,000 per rider, but that’s only an early working estimate.

Again, this is not a confirmed trip. We’re just trying to see if enough riders would seriously consider something like this before we invest time planning it properly.

From 1 November 2026, new rules will change how learner permits are renewed in Ireland. If you haven’t taken a driving test in the last 2 years, or you’ve held learner permits for 7+ years, you could be required to restart the entire process. That potentially means theory test, lessons, waiting periods… the lot.

- Obtaining a 3rd Permit:
• Must have sat a driving test in the past 2 years

-Obtaining a 4th Permit:
• Must have sat a driving test in the past 2 years
• Valid for 1 year only

-Obtaining a Permit (After 7+ years holding a Learner Permit):
• Retake the Driver Theory Test
• Apply for a new Learner Permit
• Complete EDT (12 lessons) or IBT (16–18 hrs for motorbikes) before your next driving test
