With the lightening speed rise of AI, handmade is becoming the new luxury.

But not too long ago, everything was made by hand. Most people could claim the title of maker, artist, or creator in some form or another.

Slowing down to create something by hand - even poorly - is a tapping back into our humanity. Our creativity, our artistry, and our ability to make something new and useful and beautiful is who we are.

Why shop small?!

Because they care. Genuinely.

I placed a large order from Milwaukee Steel Rule Dies and it was accidentally shipped to the wrong address.

I was frantic!!

But the sweet and good folks at MSRD were able to quickly intercept and reroute my order!

I know a larger overseas company simply wouldn’t have been willing or able to solve my seemingly small (but huge to me!!) problem!

Support companies that support you. Buy from businesses where friendly real-live-humans answer the phone.

Kindness! It’s the best.

When people walk into my studio, one of the first comments I usually here is “It smells so good in here!”

That universally loved “leather smell” comes almost exclusively from vegetable tanned leather. It’s the highest quality, most naturally processed leather you can buy.

No harsh chemicals, just naturally derived things like hemlock and mimosa + natural oils and waxes, give you a stunning, amazing smelling, uniquely patina-ing, long lasting leather.

And it’s the only type of leather we use. The bet of the best.

Hand stitching is one of my favorite parts of leather work. I use my machine a lot these days, so slowing down to hand stitch these journals was really fun.

Hand made is the art of slowing down. It’s not easy in the fast paced world.

My kids have me running in a million different directions (and LOVE IT!), but stepping into my studio is a quiet invitation to slow down, focus, and use my hands to make something lovely (or sometimes not so lovely. Mistakes are beautiful, too!)

This is your permission to take a slow moment to tap into your creativity and make something. Who cares if it’s good?!? The peace is worth the effort.

I had a delightful group of young teens in my studio today. They pelted me with questions, one of which was “doesn’t this take a LOT of time?!?”

Yes, kid. Yes, it does. But time spent creating something beautiful is time well spent. Time using your gifts of artistry and creativity, patience and attention to detail, care in the quality and appearance of the final product - it’s all time well spent!

I hope these kids leave my studio learning that creating with your hands and and sharing your God given gifts with others is always a gift to the world!
