PARENTS: SPORTS. SCHOOL. WORK. WHEN DOES DRIVER’S ED FIT?

I’m Mike, driving instructor and co-owner of Bestway Driving Academy. Sheila and I are parents too, so we understand how quickly a family calendar fills up. Driver education matters, and we want to make getting started feel manageable.

Today’s Dad joke comes with two reminders: finding a classroom option that works for your family and preparing your teen to drive safely.

DRIVER’S ED OPTIONS AT BESTWAY

All online classroom: Complete the required 30 classroom hours online, at your own pace and in line with the program requirements.

Hybrid classroom: Four 2-hour in-person classes, plus 22 hours online.

Behind-the-wheel lessons: Bestway uses online scheduling so families can select available lessons around school and activities. Availability varies, so contact the office for current options. Classroom flexibility does not replace the required behind-the-wheel training and observation.

PAYMENT PLANS
We understand that family budgets are different. We offer payment plan options and can discuss arrangements directly. Ask Sheila what works for your family.

TODAY’S DRIVING REMINDER: PRE-DRIVE HABITS

Wisconsin DMV says: “Adjust your seat and mirrors; make sure you can see out all your vehicle windows”

The same page also tells drivers to fasten their seat belts, check the vehicle’s condition, and make sure passengers are buckled.

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
SEAT. MIRRORS. BELTS. LOOK.
This is Bestway’s easy-to-remember summary of Wisconsin DMV’s pre-drive checks and AAA’s recommendation to complete seat and mirror adjustments before driving. It is not a direct DMV quote.

RIGHT TURN? YOUR SIGNAL MAY BE TOO LATE!

I’m Mike, driving instructor and co-owner of Bestway Driving Academy. I take teaching your teen seriously… but I’m still a Dad. Looking out for them and making them roll their eyes at my jokes both come naturally. Just ask my wife and fellow co-owner, Sheila.

TODAY'S ROAD TEST REMINDER
Right turns start BEFORE you reach the corner. A late signal gives other road users less time to understand your intentions.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“Activate turn signal at least 100’ before the corner.”
Wisconsin DOT Class D Skills Test Guide, BFS D15, revised July 2025, page 1, Turns, Approach, Signal:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =1

The 2026 Wisconsin Motorists’ Handbook also recommends signaling about three seconds, approximately 100 feet, ahead of the turn. One important exception in the handbook: if your turn is immediately after an intersection, begin signaling only after you have crossed the first intersection so the signal does not confuse other drivers. See Section 3K, Communication, printed page 21, PDF page 25:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =25

BESTWAY PRACTICE REMINDER
Signal early. Check vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. Reduce speed smoothly. Use the designated right turn lane and position your vehicle as close as practical to the curb or roadway edge. Complete the turn in the correct lane. Check your surroundings throughout the turn. Parents, practice these steps calmly during supervised drives.

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
100 FEET. CHECK. TURN.
This is our Bestway memory phrase, based on the Wisconsin DMV instructions, not a quotation from the state.

SEE A DEMONSTRATION

Y-TURN? ONE BACKUP. CHECK EVERY MOVE!

I’m Mike, driving instructor and co-owner of Bestway Driving Academy. Sheila and I are parents, too. We take teaching your teen seriously, but there is always room for a Dad joke!

ROAD TEST MISTAKE TO AVOID
Trying to rush a Y-turn without checking traffic each time the vehicle changes direction.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“Remember to check your surroundings for each step below:”
2026 Wisconsin Motorists’ Handbook, Section 3G, Turning, printed page 17, PDF page 21:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =21

Wisconsin’s Class D Skills Test Guide, page 2, says:
“Back no more than once and no faster than a slow walk.”
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =2

WHAT TO PRACTICE
A Y-turn changes your direction on a road too narrow for a U-turn. When practicing with an authorized supervising driver on a safe, legal residential street, remember the DMV’s traffic checks:

1. Signal right, check traffic and mirrors, safely pull over and stop.
2. Signal left, check over your left shoulder and scan before crossing the street. Stop before backing.
3. Before backing, look back over your right shoulder. Back slowly, no more than once, stopping when you have room to pull forward.
4. Check traffic left and right, then proceed smoothly in the correct lane when safe.

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
ONE BACKUP. CHECK EVERY MOVE.
This Bestway memory phrase is based on the Wisconsin DMV Class D Skills Test Guide and the 2026 Motorists’ Handbook. It is not a direct DMV quotation.

WATCH THE DEMONSTRATION

GREEN LIGHT? LOOK AGAIN!

Parents, let’s help your teen together. Today Mike shares a Dad joke and an intersection awareness reminder for teens and adults.

WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“Be alert by searching left, right and left again before going through the intersection even if you have the right-of-way.”
2026 Wisconsin Motorists’ Handbook, Section 3C Intersections, printed page 11, PDF page 15:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =15

ROAD TEST CONNECTION
The Wisconsin Class D Skills Test Guide checks traffic observation at intersections on page 1. Your teen needs to slow down, observe carefully, and proceed only when it is safe and permitted:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf

BESTWAY PRACTICE REMINDER
Before entering the intersection, scan left, right, and left again. Watch for vehicles, pedestrians, and anything entering your path. Use this scan pattern even when you think you have the right-of-way.

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
LEFT. RIGHT. LEFT AGAIN.

I’m Mike, driving instructor and co-owner of Bestway Driving Academy. Sheila and I are parents, too. We want to help your teen build confidence and safe habits, with a dad joke along the way.

ROAD TEST: ROADSIDE STOP CONTROL

Mistake to avoid: rushing the roadside stop and losing smooth control.

WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“By slowing down earlier you can make a more gradual and safer stop.”
2026 Motorists’ Handbook, Stopping, printed p. 12, PDF p. 16:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =16

ROAD TEST CONNECTION
The current Class D Skills Test Guide covers the roadside stop/start maneuver on page 2. Practice a controlled stop and the complete listed procedure:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =2

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
“pretend there’s a cup of water on the dash and you don’t want to spill a drop”
AAA Parent Coaching Guide, PDF p. 1:
https://newsroom.aaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ParentCoachingGuide2020.pdf =1

Imagine the cup. Do not put a real cup on the dashboard. This is a reminder for ordinary controlled stops. React promptly to hazards; stopping safely matters more than comfort.

Parents: which skill needs the most practice, smooth stops, turns, or parking?

Parents, during supervised practice, help your teen notice the stopping location early and begin slowing down with enough room. Stay alert to traffic and pedestrians and finish the stop in the correct place. Adults, we can model the same smooth, attentive driving.

This lesson focuses on control during the DMV roadside stop/start maneuver. It is not a ranking of the most frequent test errors. AAA’s image is a practice reminder, not a physical dashboard exercise.

TEENS: TOO CLOSE? GIVE YOURSELF FOUR SECONDS.
Parents, let’s help your teen together. Today Mike shares a joke and a following distance reminder for teens and adults.

WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“Giving enough room in front of you is very important.”
2026 Motorists’ Handbook, printed page 12, PDF page 16, Space Between Vehicles:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =16

Practice: when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed roadside marker, count four seconds before you reach it. Increase the gap for poor conditions. Parents, help count calmly during supervised practice. Choose a safe, legal route and discuss the gap without distracting the driver. If the gap becomes too short, ease off the accelerator to rebuild space when safe. Do not treat four seconds as enough for every condition. Wisconsin also identifies situations needing additional space, including slippery roads and following large vehicles.

ROAD TEST CONNECTION
The Class D Skills Test Guide, page 1, Business/Residential section, calls for safe space in front and beside your vehicle:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =1

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
“Keep open space to at least one side at all times.”
AAA parent coaching guide, Lesson 5, PDF page 2. Keep space around you and use Wisconsin’s four second guidance:
https://newsroom.aaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ParentCoachingGuide2020.pdf =2

Watch the video linked below for exact instructions. NRSF and ADTSEA explain following distance. Their general guidance differs; use FOUR seconds in Wisconsin, with more space for poor conditions:

ROAD-TEST MISTAKE TO AVOID
Backing too fast and relying only on the camera.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“Back up no faster than a slow walk.”
“Look over your right shoulder through the rear window.”
Motorists’ Handbook, printed page 18 (PDF page 22), Backing:

https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =2

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
“Focus on precision, not speed”
AAA also reminds parents and teens: “Mainly look directly over your shoulder when backing”.

Parents: practice in a safe, clear location with your teen’s supervising driver present. Check the area before moving, continue checking while backing, and stop if anyone enters the path. The backup camera adds information; it does not replace looking behind and around the vehicle. Follow Wisconsin’s instructions for the test maneuver.

Teens aren’t the only ones who need a refresher. Some of us adults have had a little longer to practice our bad habits! We’re sharing the road with new drivers. Let’s give them a good example to follow.

DRIVING MISTAKE TO AVOID
Turning your wheels the wrong way when parked uphill with a curb.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“If you are parked uphill with a curb, you will turn your wheels all the way to the left”
Motorists’ Handbook, printed page 19 (PDF page 23), Hill parking:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =23

This lesson concerns parking on the right side of the road. The handbook also directs drivers to use the parking brake. Downhill parking and uphill parking without a curb require a different wheel direction.

https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =2

Parents: during supervised practice in a safe, legal location, ask your teen to identify the slope and whether a curb is present before choosing wheel direction. Use the full DMV instructions, including the parking brake.

Teens aren’t the only ones who need a refresher. Some of us adults have had a little longer to practice our bad habits! We’re sharing the road with new drivers. Let’s give them a good example to follow.

Today’s joke comes with a reminder for new drivers AND those of us who have been behind the wheel for a few decades!

ROAD-TEST MISTAKE TO AVOID
Rolling through a stop sign. Slowing down isn’t stopping—even when the intersection looks empty.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV LOOKS FOR

The Class D Skills Test Guide says:
“Always stop before a painted stop line.”

Page 1, Turns/Stop and Stopped Intersection:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf

The Motorists’ Handbook says:
“You must come to a complete stop and wait until your path is clear before continuing.”

Printed page 25 (PDF page 29), Stop:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =29

BESTWAY’S PRACTICE REMINDER

Approach at a controlled speed and brake smoothly. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop before the painted stop line. If there’s no painted stop line, stop before the crosswalk.

Check for traffic and pedestrians, yield as required, and proceed only when clear. Simply slowing down and looking around while the car continues moving does not replace a complete stop.

Parents, practice this during your supervised drives. Help your teen recognize the stopping location early so the stop is smooth and controlled. This is one specific DMV requirement to practice, not a ranking of the most frequent road-test mistakes.

Teens aren’t the only ones who need a refresher. Some of us adults have had a little longer to practice our bad habits! We’re sharing the road with new drivers. Let’s give them a good example to follow.
