If you can’t comfortably place your hand on the wheel, it’s too hot to clean.

You should NEVER spray cleaner onto a hot wheel. That's how you get drip marks and stains.

Remember, wheel cleaners are designed to dwell, not instantly dry on contact.

If the wheel is hot from driving, braking, or sitting in direct sun, the cleaner can flash too quickly before you have time to properly agitate and rinse it away.

At best, you won't clean anything. At worst, it'll actively stain the wheel face.

Quick rules before cleaning wheels:

✅ Work in the shade
✅ Make sure the wheel is cool to the touch
✅ Spray cleaner from the bottom up
✅ Don’t let cleaner dry on the surface
✅ Rinse thoroughly before moving on

RULE OF THUMB: If you can’t comfortably place your hand on the wheel, it’s too hot to clean.

First time polishing a whole car? ⚠️ Don’t try to do it all in one day. Here's why👇

Polishing a car for the first time is hard.

Even if you've watched a million videos and memorized every "how-to" guide, it's still going to be hard to do efficiently.

Without efficiency, each panel is going to take much longer than it would for a professional.

Soon you find yourself in a position where it's 4 in the afternoon, you've got dinner plans, and you feel like you need to rush through the rest just to get it done.

When you rush, you make mistakes. When you make mistakes, you have to fix them later. Which makes polishing take even longer, paradoxically.

So don't be the beginner biting off more than you can chew. Polish in bite-sized chunks. Pick one panel and focus on that. It will be a lot less stressful and you'll be under a lot less pressure.

And most importantly, don't fly blind. Have a process you can follow.

❓Do you need a smaller polisher or backing plate for thin, narrow panels? Not necessarily.

For a free-spinning random orbital polisher, it's necessary. Pads need to make full, flat contact with the paint in order to keep rotating. Using too big a pad would make it stall out.

But if you're using a gear-driven DA?? Just use the tool you already have!

With a gear-driven tool, you can actually get away with just using part of the pad on the paint surface. They don't stall with pressure because they are FORCED to rotate by the gears inside. Kind of like a rotary polisher, only with oscillation added.

That's when you realize there are more reasons why gear-driven and rotary are more efficient. These tools aren't just fast at correcting! They're more versatile, too.

☝️ Now here's the RIGHT way to move a polisher for heavy paintwork correction.

Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb for heavier paint correction is 1 inch/sec.

That should give the abrasives in the pad and the product time to abrade the paint and remove the defects as the machine rotates and oscillates the pad.

What you don't want to do is what we showed in our last video: the "wild man" technique. You won't get much done that way.

Yes, you can go faster on lighter defects. But otherwise (and especially if you're new) take it slow.

❌ Resist the urge to move your polisher quickly to match the tool's speed and power.

Maybe you think it looks cool. Maybe you think you’ll get the job done faster.

Neither is true.

Yes, there are experts who can move a polisher quickly and still get good results. But they’ve had years of experience. They know how to keep the pad flat, maintain consistent contact with the paint, overlap each pass properly, and control pressure even at higher arm speeds.

When a beginner tries to do the same thing, the opposite usually happens.

They lose pad contact. They fail to overlap passes. They bounce over body lines. They apply uneven pressure. And instead of getting uniform defect removal, they end up with inconsistent results across the panel.

So please: slow down.

When you’re starting out, controlled arm speed is one of the easiest ways to improve your polishing results. Let the pad, polish, and machine do the work. Your job is to guide the tool, not chase it.

Don't worry: eventually, you’ll be able to make the polisher “dance on paint", as likes to say.

But even then... technique is what makes it work.

See the gears inside this polisher? That’s what keeps the pad spinning when a free-spinning DA would normally stall.

On a gear-driven orbital polisher, the gears in the tool mesh with the gears on the backing plate. Once they’re locked together, the pad is forced to rotate and oscillate.

That means no more guessing whether your pad is still spinning. No more stopping every few seconds to check rotation. And no more losing correction power the moment you tilt the tool or work over a curved panel.

For beginners, that can feel like a lot. A free-spinning DA gives you a built-in safety net because it stalls if you accidentally press too hard.

But once you have some experience, forced rotation is a major upgrade. You can correct faster, stay more consistent, and work tricky body lines with a lot more control.

No matter how hard you press or how far you tilt, a gear-driven polisher keeps on spinning.

For beginners, that can be a little intimidating. They like the stalling action because it makes them feel safe, like they can't burn the paint. If that's you, then by all means, stick with a free-spinning DA for now.

But for people who have a little bit more experience, this is a godsend. No more checking for pad rotation on curved panels. The ability to buff on edge for smaller sections. It's a major upgrade.

But there's a learning curve to it. And a lot of different tools on the market. If you're just starting out with gear-driven, you need a strong SOP and a buyer's guide to the tools available.

🔄 If your pad isn't spinning, it's not doing anything.

Pad stall is a common issue with free-spinning DAs, and it happens when too much or uneven pressure is applied. Curves naturally cause uneven pressure on the pad, which leads to stalling in those sections.

The fact is, free-spinning random orbitals NEED rotation in order to correct defects. Oscillation alone will not do the job. That's not to say oscillation isn't abrading the paint, it's just not doing it effectively enough to be a viable method for paint correction.

Using a gear-driven polisher has a bit of a learning curve, and there are a lot of different tools in this category on the market now.
