Is there such a thing as too much adjustability for your road car?

Not necessarily.

The right suspension gives you the ability to fine-tune your car for comfort, performance, or anything in between. For dual-purpose street and track cars, that flexibility can be a game changer.

The best setup isn't the one with the most adjustments.

Made a heave damper change up front. Improved over some of the mid corner bump behavior. There was a lot of other things to focus on so that the car could continue gaining confidence and full functionality.

100,000 miles later... they're back.

These ICON shocks came through our shop for their original build over 100k miles ago, and after years of hard use, they're back for a rebuild.

That's the beauty of a quality suspension system. When it's built right, serviced properly, and maintained along the way, it doesn't get thrown away — it gets rebuilt and put back to work.

The previous setup lived a hard life, but thanks to quality components and a proper service process, these shocks are getting a second chapter.

Monotubes have Piston area working for them, but sometimes in racing it's not enough. Even base valves or canister valving acts in series to compensate for the pressure drops above the piston. So they are constrained as a bit of a slave to the main piston valving or it is often used to completely control the compression curve. The later overshoots the needed pressure and at a point it creates a more compliant and less responsive device.

TTX is typically filled with 75psi, but requires almost no pressure to operate. There is a direct pressure supplying both sides of the damper circuit. This allows as much damping as you could ever want without being dependent on nitrogen pressure or valves in series like base valves and reservoir valving.

Too much adjustability for a road car?

Not necessarily.

Additional adjustability can improve comfort, handling, and versatility for just about any vehicle. And if your car sees double duty on the street and at the track, those extra adjustments become even more valuable.

The goal isn't maximum adjustability.
The goal is the right setup for how you use your car. 🏁

3rd elements or commonly called heave springs/dampers are additive to the corner springs/dampers and carry loads shared across an axle. Simply put any non-rolling component of motion engages the 3rd element. Aero pushes down, braking pitches forward, throttle pitches backward, and even one wheel bump partially engages it. has a 3rd element at the front and rear to handle intense aero loads. The additive nature of the 3rd element and the control of mass across an entire axle instead of just a corner gives this a bit different consideration.

An interesting bit is the difference in motion ratio in pure heave and one wheel bump. In one wheel bump it only moves half as much as if both wheels move. Wheel rate is spring rate x Motion ratio squared. With half the motion at the shock acting on one wheel you get 1/4 the spring forces (softer of uneven bumps for the same heave stiffness) and the damper is also at half the leverage but also half the shaft velocity and so usually some lesser force as well.

The ooold JRZ set at the end had one defective front piston that was just barely convex on the rebound side. When the piston surface falls away from the shim towards the edge it allows the ports to diffuse pressure over a wider area as if they are much larger. At a low flow/pressure drop it gives more leverage on the shim stack, as flow picks up it becomes more similar with an delay/offset. It made the graph softer especially right off the start and was difficult to figure out without spending a lot of time. This almost never happens. The 46mm stuff is like 20yrs old, but luckily we found one and overnighted it.
