When the stop arm comes out, a child may be stepping into the road. 🛑🚌

National School Bus Safety Week is a reminder of a responsibility we share every day:

🟡 Yellow flashing lights: Slow down and prepare to stop.
🔴 Red flashing lights and an extended stop arm: Stop. Remain stopped until the red lights turn off, the stop arm retracts, and the bus begins moving. Watch for children before proceeding.

Know the laws where you drive—required stopping distances and rules for traffic approaching from the opposite direction on divided or multilane roads vary by state.

Put distractions away, give buses space, and make every stop count. Share this reminder with the drivers in your community.

National School Bus Safety Week is a reminder of the habits that matter every day, at every stop.

Riders: Arrive early so there’s no need to rush. Stay at least 10 feet—five giant steps—back from the curb, and avoid running or playing near the road. Wait for the bus to stop completely and the driver’s okay before boarding.

Motorists: Put distractions away, slow down near bus stops, and watch for children walking or crossing. Allow extra time during school transportation hours so you’re never rushing through a bus stop.

Safe trips start with all of us. Share these everyday reminders with the riders, families, and drivers in your community.
