To whoever designed my attic entrance via chimney:

I’ve already contacted local wildlife authorities. 🐿️🚨

For years my house was perfectly fine. ZERO issues. Then I installed my wood stove, and now this giant stainless steel pipe has created a VIP highway for squirrels, raccoons, and birds straight into my attic.

I modified the ceiling plate to cover MOST of the gap, but let me be clear: this is still unacceptable. The gap is an open invitation. I am now forced to monitor my attic like it’s a high-security facility.

If I find out any critter moves in because of this, I WILL be pressing charges. Absolutely ridiculous.

To the person who thought passing a chimney through a soffit was harmless:

I’ve already called every imaginary building inspector I know. 🚨

For three years, my wood stove ran perfectly. Clearances met, draft perfect, zero problems. Then I had to route this pipe through my soffit and suddenly, according to the internet, I’ve built an open invitation for every squirrel, bird, and raccoon within a five-mile radius.

I purchased a ceiling plate and tried to cover the gap. It still looks horrible. But let me be very clear: this is now officially unacceptable.

If any wildlife moves in because of this, I WILL be pressing charges. Absolutely ridiculous.

To whoever installed this chimney setup:

I've already contacted several internet experts and am preparing a full investigation. 🚨

For THREE YEARS I've been walking past this thing thinking everything was fine. Then I saw one photo online and suddenly I'm being told my house is apparently one gust of wind away from becoming a case study.

Now I'm stuck reviewing brackets, supports, clearances, guy wires, and a dozen conflicting opinions from people whose profile pictures are pickup trucks.

Let me be very clear: this chimney has survived the strongest windstorm in town history without so much as a wobble. Yet somehow the internet has convinced me I'm living on borrowed time.

If anyone can explain exactly what's wrong before I spend thousands of dollars fixing something that may not even need fixing, I'd appreciate it.

Absolutely stressed. 😤

To whoever posted a picture of a chimney like mine and caused this panic:

I hope you're happy.

For three years I've enjoyed a perfectly normal life. No leaks. No movement. No strange noises. The thing survived windstorms that sent patio furniture into neighboring ZIP codes.

Then I see ONE post online and suddenly I'm being told my chimney is apparently held together by hopes, dreams, and stainless steel.

I've now spent my entire evening zooming into roof brackets and googling phrases like "catastrophic chimney failure."

If this setup is actually wrong, I expect a detailed engineering report immediately.

This chimney has caused me more emotional distress in the last 24 hours than it has in the previous three years combined.

Completely unacceptable. 🚨

To whoever thought "just cut a hole in the soffit" was an acceptable solution:

Absolutely not.

I was told my clearances are correct. Fantastic. Wonderful. Great news.

What wasn't mentioned is that the finished product would look like a chimney violently escaped through the side of my house.

Now every time I walk outside, my eyes go directly to that gap.

Not the stove.
Not the chimney.
Not the house.

The gap.

The giant invitation addressed to every critter in the county.

I've already spent several hours engineering solutions that somehow look worse than the original problem.

At this point the squirrels are probably discussing floor plans.

Unacceptable.

To my future self: stop hitting chimney pipe like it owes you money.

I thought I was being proactive about creosote buildup, since apparently cleaning once in the fall might not be enough anymore. Next thing I know, I’m outside staring at this shiny metal chimney in the snow wondering if I just created more problems than I solved.

This is exactly how a “quick maintenance question” turns into a homeowner panic spiral.

Can this be cleaned while the stove is running, or is that one of those ideas that sounds smart right before the fire department shows up?

To whoever said exterior chimney installs always look “clean and simple” — I need you to come explain this metal roller coaster on the side of the house.

Between the offset pipe, the roof brace, the wall brackets, the snow, and that patched wall pe*******on, this thing looks like it was designed by someone arguing with physics.

Yes, I know chimneys need support. Yes, I know clearances matter. But standing back and looking at this setup has me wondering if it’s a proper install or a stainless steel escape route for Santa.

Be honest — would you trust this, question it, or call a chimney guy before lighting the stove? 😂

To whoever designed houses with plumbing exactly where a chimney wants to go — I just want to talk.

I wanted this install to come out nice and clean above ground, but of course the plumbing had other ideas. So now I’m here with permits pulled, code references open, one bracket still on the way, and a stainless chimney that currently looks like it belongs on a rocket launch pad.

Before anyone panics, it’s not done yet. Final inspection still has to happen, and the remaining work is a 15° offset plus two more lengths of pipe.

Still, I had to throw the rain cap on and let the internet enjoy it. Be honest — would you rate this a 10, a code violation, or “call the neighbor over immediately”? 😂

To the people who are about to zoom in and roast this chimney — go ahead, I already know it looks ridiculous right now.

The install is still in progress, final inspection isn’t done, and there’s still cleanup left everywhere. But standing back and looking at this huge stainless stack bolted to the side of the house has me wondering if I built a chimney or gave my home an exhaust system.

Between the ladder, the Duravent boxes, the dirt pile, and the pipe going straight up past the roofline, this job officially reached “neighbors are definitely talking” status.

Would you call this progress, a code inspector’s headache, or a backyard rocket launch setup? 😂

To whoever signed off on this exterior chimney install — please explain how this bracket situation is supposed to be normal.

I had my old failing masonry chimney removed and replaced with a stainless steel chimney for my wood stove. I expected a clean professional install, not something that makes me stand outside questioning every piece of hardware on the wall.

This isn’t a harmless cosmetic issue. If the supports are wrong, that becomes my safety problem, my repair bill, and my headache when weather and wind hit.

I’m not trying to be picky, but I’m also not paying professional money for something that looks pieced together. Am I overreacting, or would you call them back?
