A Provo Fire family got wiped out in a flash flood. Spencer, his wife Katrina, and their three sons, Reid, Thayne, and Gage, didn’t survive. Their daughter Lydia did. She’s the one left to carry all of it.

I never met Spencer. Doesn’t matter. He wore the same type uniform I do, and that makes him family.

Mid-July in Utah and the higher-elevation spots are finally hitting their stride. Fishlake National Forest, about an hour from Nephi, is sitting at 9,000 feet and running a good 15 degrees cooler than the valley floor right now. If the heat down south has you second-guessing a camping trip, this is the move. Pines, aspens, the lake, and almost no one there on a weekday. Worth the drive.

Utah hidden gem this week: Fremont Indian State Park, about 45 minutes south of Marysvale on US-89. It sits inside Clear Creek Canyon and holds one of the largest collections of Fremont petroglyphs in the state. There are five hiking trails, a museum that actually explains what you are looking at, and enough canyon scenery to fill a memory card. Most people drive straight past it on the way to Zion or Bryce. If you are already staying at Sevier River RV Park through our Basecamp Package, this one is practically in your backyard. Go on a Thursday morning before the weekend crowd finds it.
