🏁 23 Victories, 260 Corners, and a Porsche 911: Exploring the Isle of Man TT with a Racing Legend
British motorcycle racer John McGuinness is a true legend of the Isle of Man TT. With 23 victories and thousands of laps around the famous 60-kilometre course, he knows almost every corner by heart.
But this time, he returned to the legendary route on four wheels — behind the wheel of his own Porsche 911 Carrera 4S (996).
🏍️ From a Childhood Dream to His Own Corner
McGuinness fell in love with the Isle of Man as a child. He even skipped school to catch the ferry to the island with his BMX bike.
He made his TT debut in 1996, and in 2013, one of the circuit’s corners was officially named McGuinness’s Corner in his honour.
During races, he takes that very corner in sixth gear at approximately 290 km/h.
🏎️ Why the Porsche 911?
The Isle of Man TT takes place on public roads. Where everyday speed limits can be as low as 48 km/h, racers reach speeds exceeding 300 km/h.
On the Mountain section, McGuinness has reached approximately 314 km/h on his motorcycle.
But behind the wheel of his Porsche, speed isn’t the priority. Instead, he enjoys the scenery, the corners, and the details he rarely gets to appreciate while racing.
❤️ Stories Behind the Circuit
One of the route’s most unusual spots is the Secret Garden, where McGuinness has invited friends to watch the racing up close. Among them are former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber and automotive journalist Chris Harris.
Another memorable section is The Nook, a tree-lined stretch that stays damp for much of the year. During a race, even the smallest mistake here can ruin an otherwise perfect lap.
Despite thousands of laps, McGuinness says the Isle of Man TT never loses its magic.
“I’ll never get tired of lapping this place. How could I? It’s the greatest road in the world.”
Sometimes, even for a racing legend, the best drive isn’t about speed — it’s about enjoying every moment behind the wheel. 🖤
