As we count down to Ducati's 100th anniversary on July 4, we're looking back at the engineering breakthroughs and historic moments that built one of the world's most iconic motorcycle brands.
Did you know?
The word Desmosedici combines two defining pieces of Ducati history.
"Desmo" refers to Ducati's famous desmodromic valve system, an engineering concept first developed in the 1950s by Ducati engineer Fabio Taglioni. While other motorcycle engines rely on valve springs to close the valves, Taglioni's design uses mechanical components to both open and close them. The result? Greater precision, improved reliability at high RPM, and a competitive advantage on the racetrack.
The system made its racing debut in 1956 on the Ducati 125 Grand Prix motorcycle and has remained a defining feature of Ducati performance ever since.
"Sedici" is Italian for 16, referencing the original MotoGP Desmosedici's 16-valve V4 engine when Ducati entered MotoGP in 2003.
Today, "Desmosedici" represents more than a race bike—it's a symbol of nearly 70 years of engineering innovation.
Tomorrow, we'll explore another chapter in Ducati's incredible history.
