This video shows the original ELF alongside the ELF 3.0, the next generation from Organic Transit. A fully enclosed three-wheeler you can pedal, run on an electric motor, all while charging from its solar roof. You stay dry, skip the gas station, and still get a little exercise on the ride home.

Meet the first person in line for an ELF 3.0.

Doug Davis is passionate about connecting fitness with green technology, which is what drew him to invest in Organic Transit. He is 76. He coached gymnastics, and today he runs a heart rate monitoring system used in several hundred schools.

He has also owned five ELFs, and he trained in all of them. He's looking forward to doing the same in the ELF 3.0, and going for morning lattes with his wife, with the flexibility to choose how much of a workout he wants that day.

Today, heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States, and activity is one of the things that prevents it. Doug has spent his career promoting a healthy heart lifestyle to thousands of people through the technology he developed, and he incorporates the ELF into that lifestyle.

Have you noticed more delivery bikes in your city?

New York City counted over 5 million packages moved by cargo bike in 2022. Carriers and cities are both moving this direction faster than most people realize.

Last mile delivery is moving onto pedal-electric vehicles. The ELF was built for it: enclosed, pedal-electric, about 10 watt-hours per mile, with a 200 watt solar panel charging while the vehicle sits at the curb.

The Financial Times featured the ELF 3.0 over the weekend.

The piece makes a point ELF owners already know: most trips are short, and short trips in a gas car are some of the most wasteful miles anyone drives. An enclosed, solar and pedal-electric vehicle with room for a passenger and a load of groceries handles those trips on a fraction of the energy. And as the writer noted, it's cute.

“Why are we spending so much money to move tons of steel just to run for groceries?"

Transportation is the second-largest expense in the average American household. It is also the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the country. And about half of all car trips are under three miles.

Rob Cotter has been building an answer to that since 2012. He built 850 ELFs in Durham, NC and delivered them to riders in all 50 states and 15 countries. Owners averaged 2,300 miles a year. Roughly 80% used it to replace their second car. Over 10 million miles, we tracked 25 accidents involving cars and trucks, with no serious injuries.

Then production stopped. Rob bought the company back and is building the new and improved version, the ELF 3.0.
