Big traditions sometimes require big decisions.
For 28 years, Pep Rally on the Square became one of Robertson County's favorite traditions. Seeing six schools fill downtown with marching bands, cheerleaders, football teams, and school spirit, all with the courthouse in the background, created memories that many of us still talk about today.
Last year, we moved the event to Martin Luther King Jr. Park because the sod planted around the courthouse couldn’t take the wear. In many ways, it was a great success. The park offered bleachers, restrooms, room to spread out, space for the competitions, and even food trucks.
Unfortunately, there was one challenge we simply couldn't overcome. With only one entrance into the park, traffic backed up for miles before the event. Despite working with our community partners to improve transportation, we could not find a solution that allowed thousands of students, families, buses, and visitors to enter safely and efficiently.
After many conversations and careful planning, we have made the decision to rotate Pep Rally among each of Robertson County's six public high schools.
The biggest reason is simple.
Safety.
This decision was made with the recommendations of Robertson County Schools administration, the City of Springfield, TN - Government, and the Robertson County Sheriff's Office, all of whom share the same goal we do: providing the safest possible environment for our students, families, and community.
There are some exciting advantages, too. Each school will have the opportunity to host the county, showcase its campus, and welcome the community through its own front doors. Every school will have the chance to put its own stamp on this tradition before passing the torch to the next host. Our first school host will be White House Heritage - as they were the winner last year.
We know this decision will disappoint some people because Pep Rally has become such a beloved tradition. We understand that. But when we weigh tradition against the safety of thousands of students and spectators, the decision becomes clear.
Pep Rally has never been about a location.
It's about six schools, one community, and the pride we share in Robertson County.
We're excited to begin this next chapter and can't wait to see you at this year's Pep Rally.
