Just wrapped up this steering wheel switch replacement for Jeff!

A stuck button in the right-side steering wheel control assembly was causing a fault code and disabling the entire right-side control panel. Diagnostics were completed a couple of weeks ago, and once the replacement part arrived from GM, it was time to get it fixed.

The battery was properly disconnected and the airbag system safely disabled before removing the airbag and steering wheel assembly. The failed switch bank was replaced, everything was reassembled to manufacturer specifications, and all steering wheel controls were tested and verified to be working correctly once again.

After the repair, Jeff was shown how to access his online client portal, where he can view both past and current invoices, request appointments, and keep track of service history. We can even set up automatic maintenance reminders so oil changes and scheduled services don't get overlooked.

Thank you for your business, Jeff! We appreciate the opportunity to keep your Silverado operating the way it should.

Knocked out the front passenger-side hub on a 2012 Cadillac SRX this morning.

I've seen plenty of techs zip axle nuts and hub bolts on with an impact and call it good after about three ugga-duggas. Me? Not so much.

Torque specs exist for a reason. They're not just numbers some engineer threw at a dartboard after lunch. Proper clamping force and bearing preload matter.
Speaking of clamping force, you see all that rust inside the knuckle? Thats gotta go too!! Any bit of debris and rust affects the overall clamping force even when the bolts are torqued to spec.

If you just give the axle nut "the sauce" because "tight is tight," you can actually overload the bearing and shorten its lifespan. That's a great way to turn a new part into another repair bill.

Now, I'll be the first to admit I'm probably not the fastest mechanic around. Sometimes my OCD gets the better of me. But I'd rather spend an extra few minutes doing it right than save five minutes and have a customer stranded on the side of the road.

Matter of fact, this morning I drove back out to a four-wheeler I finished yesterday because I couldn't remember if I had torqued one of the wheels. In my defense, I was also busy avoiding a cow that apparently thought I needed an unscheduled shower and making sure I didn't leave any tools behind for the herd to step on.

Turns out I had torqued it correctly.

The cow was innocent. My brain was the problem.

But that's how seriously I take safety. If I can't remember, I go check. I'd rather look a little crazy than have a wheel pass me on the highway later.

Measure twice. Torque once. Dodge livestock whenever possible.

Being a mobile mechanic means every day is an adventure.

Today I was elbow-deep in a Polaris Sportsman CV boot replacement when a cow 5 feet away decided to water the grass.

Pretty sure that wasn't covered in ASE training.
But proper PPE definitely was. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ”ง

Let's play Spot The Difference!!
Just wrapped up the fuel and oil service on this 14 Ram 6.7
Along with both fuel filters, oil and filter, we also changed out this crusty dusty ol Air Filter and the Serpentine Belt.
Ill tell you Hwhut, those 6.7 Cummins Belts sure put up a fight.

Ive had this 5 pc filter socket set since around '14-'15 and everytime I use it Im glad I got it. Its been used on just about everything from Mack's, Pete's, KW's, all the Merry Chryslers, and a few others. They dont just work on filter housing, they provide a good extra shallow socket when needed in frame rails and gear box bolts too.

When I accidentally rip a cv boot during install and have to spend an extra 2 hours in drive time to get the right one, I have no right to get upset or charge extra for that time and fuel. It's my own dumb asphalt. . . ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Yesterday's schedule looked something like this:

VBS drop-off: โœ”๏ธ

Radiator replacement: โœ”๏ธ

Transmission service: โœ”๏ธ

Pick the kids up before they started asking if Dad lives under a hood now: โœ”๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

Yesterday's project was a 2003 Buick that needed a radiator replacement and transmission service.

Now, if you've never done one of these Buicks before, the radiator isn't exactly hard to replace... it's just that GM decided the radiator should have several layers of security clearance before it's allowed to leave the vehicle.

First, the air box had to come out. That wouldn't have been a big deal except the ECM lives in there too, so we ended up removing the vehicle's brain just to replace a radiator.

Then the engine had to be supported and the front engine mounts removed. That's right. The radiator wasn't trapped by the engine mounts. The engine mounts were trapped by the radiator. Or maybe the radiator was trapped by the engine mounts. Honestly, after staring at it long enough, nobody really knows anymore.

Once everything was out of the way, the job actually went pretty smoothly. It just felt like we were dismantling half the car to replace one part.

While we were in there, we also serviced the transmission. No drain plug? No problem. A little front-end lift, a carefully loosened pan, and gravity handled the rest. The transmission magnet looked great for 23 years old, the pan cleaned up nicely, and a new filter and filter seal was installed before filling it back up with fresh fluid.

A few hours later:

โœ… New radiator installed
โœ… New transmission filter installed
โœ… Fresh coolant
โœ… Fresh transmission fluid
โœ… Test driven
โœ… No leaks
โœ… No warning lights
โœ… No leftover bolts wondering if theyll ever find a home

The kids learned Bible stories at VBS while
I learned that on a 2003 Buick, the engine mounts occasionally need to raise their hands and praise the Lord so the radiator can come out. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ˜‚

The last leg of the 50 mile test drive. I drove down Fairgrounds, Hwy33, Hwy177, and Hwy51 twice at various speeds and loads, letting all the hills and flat roads give it a good drive before finally coming back and cleaning up the work area.

After waiting on the news on the old heads being warped, waiting on the new heads to come in, and getting rained out a couple days, this not-so-ol' Ram is back on its feet.

During the process of reinstalling the heads, I took the time to put the coolant system under pressure and used by bore scope to look inside each cylinder as well as the oil pan to verify we didn't have any coolant leaks internally by a cracked block.

Then I continued with the install of the push rods, rocker rails, valve covers, and intake assembly, replaced the oil and filter, then finally drained out the rest of the coolant and water I put in to do the pressure test and finally pulled a vacuum on the coolant system in order to properly fill it to avoid getting air trapped in it.

It's now waiting to be picked up and get Jason back and forth to work so he can ditch the rental.

First fire up after filling the oil and coolant. The exhaust manifolds were still open, but I started it up and let it run for a few seconds before hooking them back up.
Before starting it, I removed the fuel pump relay and cranked it a few times to allow the oil to circulate up to the cam, lifters and rockers before it ran.
