You’ve decided to compare service quotes before heading off on your holiday. A local independent workshop comes highly recommended. But a small voice in your head says “What makes them reputable? What should I check?”

That’s a fair question.

The Guidelines allow you to use a reputable independent service provider during your warranty period. In plain terms, reputable means:
✅ They use qualified mechanics or technicians
✅ They follow recognised service standards and the manufacturer’s schedule
✅ They use legitimate, traceable parts and fluids
✅ They record the service properly in your service book or digital record
✅ They carry appropriate commercial insurance

It does not mean they must carry a specific brand logo.

💡 A small amount of homework checking that a workshop is reputable can end up saving you a serious amount of money!

🎯 Before you book, ask: Will you update my service record and can I get an itemised invoice showing parts and oil used?

Your workshop isn't behind the times.
They’re often working without full access to the technical data they need.
That matters – for turnaround time, costs, and your experience.

As vehicles become more complex – packed with electronics, software and sensors – independent workshops are rising to meet the challenge. But there’s one thing still holding many of them back: access to official repair information.

Gunther Schmitz, SA Representative of Garage Hive and Chairman of Right to Repair SA, shares: “Today’s vehicles are built like networks. Without access to the right software version or wiring diagram, you can’t even begin the job properly.”

And while platforms like HaynesPro and Autodata offer great support, they’re not always enough.

Dewald Ranft, MIWA Chairman, explains: “We’re not asking for special treatment. We’re asking for fair access so we can give customers the service they expect. Right now, smaller workshops spend hours sourcing data that should be more accessible.”

That extra time? It can lead to avoidable delays, extra costs, and—unfairly—damage to the trust customers place in their local workshop.

That’s why MIWA, a Tier 1 sponsor of Right to Repair SA, is backing the Right to Repair Conference at Automechanika Johannesburg tomorrow.

It’s a free, half-day session that brings everyone to the table – OEMs, suppliers, workshops and the public – to talk solutions.

Because when the industry works together, the results are better for everyone.

We’re also excited to welcome you to the SpannerTorque Pavilion at Automechanika Johannesburg. It’s a space created for MIWA members and the public to explore tools, diagnostics, innovations, and support networks that keep workshops competitive and compliant.

“SpannerTorque is our way of sharing knowledge and raising the bar,” says Ranft. “And it’s open to anyone who wants to build a stronger future for the aftermarket.”
