Sketch of the Edinburgh Castle Hotel, Gympie Rd, Kedron, ca.1892, and how it looked in 1958.
The unusual story of the Edinburgh Castle Hotel dates all the way back to 1865, when the original Edinburgh Castle Hotel was built by a man named William Orr, on Gympie Rd, Bald Hills (now the site of the Bonny View Hotel).
The hotel name was chosen to acknowledge the original Scottish settlers in the Bald Hills area, and was owned by the Orr family until Michael Goodwin took over the license in 1885.
The hotel operated primarily as a staging post for coaches travelling between Brisbane and Gympie, however with the introduction of the railway in 1882 and the resultant reduction in patronage, it declined into a state of disrepair until its license was eventually revoked in 1888.
Michael Goodwin then applied for a licence to build a second Edinburgh Castle Hotel at Kedron (which was actually situated on the opposite corner from the present hotel). However this hotel burnt down in 1892, and so a third was constructed on the site of the present Edinburgh Castle Hotel.
