The training provided is not usually covered during the licensing process.

At $55 per person for the online video modules it is inexpensive and comprehensive risk management.

How big is your bubble?

Safe drivers imagine a bubble of space around their vehicle which includes above, behind, to the sides and in front.

Depending on the road and weather conditions and the vehicle being driven, this bubble adjusts in size.

The only time it is as small as shown, is when parked. If moving with a small bubble, hoping nothing goes wrong is all that is preventing an incident.

The bubble needs to consider the ability to see hazards, the reaction time of all road users and the braking distance of all vehicles around you.

By having a bubble too small for the situation a driver risks not being able to stop in time, or being hit by someone else who cannot stop in time (like a large vehicle in your bubble that is too close behind you).

Driving too fast into a sharp bend (the road has a close vanishing point) essential bursts your bubble as you are travelling faster and require more distance to react and brake than the distance you can see ahead.

A branch of safety

We do a lot of training across Papua New Guinea. Where money is scarce and vehicles are poorly equipped.

But you have to love the ingenuity of PNG motorists. A tree branch becomes the warning triangle to alert other road users to the breakdown ahead.

I doubt most Australian drivers who don’t have a safety triangle would think to or would be too embarrassed to put something on the road as a warning to others. It’s another advantage of bush knives (machetes) being prevalent, that a branch can be hacked off at a whim.

What are you looking at

a) part of a vehicles fuel system after the standard diesel was subjected to low temperature and froze (so not winter diesel)

b) the result of accidentally filling a diesel fuel tank with Adblue and driving until the vehicle mysteriously stopped

Whatever your response it’s unfortunately a $20,000 repair for an entire new fuel system including injectors.

Having an each way bet

Well my ongoing battle with the NRMA continues. They either don’t see the illogical situation they have created or are deliberately ignoring it.

Quick history

A few month ago, grubs stole the wheels off our car trailer parked inside Willowbank Raceway. An insurance claim was made and initially denied on the basis our company insurance did not cover trailers used for business purposes. This was a joke. Eventually NRMA paid the claim and refunded our policy for this year. They said if we needed insurance on this trailer we needed to arrange coverage for business usage. But the business division at NRMA said whilst they cover trailers for business, they do not cover driving school trailers.

So then I sought a refund of all trailer insurance paid over recent years.

But yesterday they denied this based on their assertion my previous policy provided coverage.

But they are having an each way bet here. Either my trailers were uninsured as they were not covered for business usage, or because they were used for driver training they were not covered. Their own actions and statements over recent months show coverage was very unlikely to have existed over the past years.

They seem to think they can argue both ways at the same time.

Rat sh straps

You can see the ratchet straps fail before the concrete blocks leave the truck.

The autonomous emergency braking of the truck triggers (see its hazard lights trigger) when the ute merged in front (or cut the truck off)
