Flowers and Chocolates

A huge thanks to Angela for her 12+ years working for Safe Drive Training.

With the relocation of our Head Office, Angela will work her last day on Thursday.

Turning confusion

This one has them stumped. In many countries when turning you must stay in your lane. In Australia you must stay in your lane if multiple lanes are turning. Typically there are lane lines on both sides of your vehicle denoting you need to remain in your lane.

But the answer to the post below is C as the driver can move into any lane in the new road.

Likewise any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction and turning left into the same road, can enter any lane they choose.

Many respondents to the OP steadfastly believed A was the correct answer or that the rule was different in other parts of Australia (which is also wrong)

The yellow car is turning right from Pirie Street onto Hutt Street and needs to get in the left lane. Which of the following is most accurate for the yellow car?

A. Must turn into the right lane, then indicate left and change lanes when safe
B. Must turn into the right lane and drive at least 200 metres before changing lanes
C. Can turn directly into the left lane

One place remains

Our Junior Driver Training is full but we have one place available at our defensive driving course this Sunday 1 November at Willowbank.

Hands on practical training runs from 8:30am till
12:30pm.

$297 with vehicles supplied (including skid car and the BRZ pictured)

Well that’s another milestone

Safe Drive Training has existed for 30 years.

25 years in my ownership.

We stopped counting along time ago but conservatively that means 125,000 people have been trained (excluding the tens of thousands completing eLearning courses, watching our video or who will read our new book).

Back in our peak times we had over a hundred school groups per year, 7000+ participants and had a dozen or so staff.

One week to go before we leave Logan City behind.

Practical questioned

This post from the NSW Government created fierce debate.

Too many thought the answer was obviously A.
Some steadfastly put their foot in the their mouth by confirming it was A and there could be no other answer.

Those that knew the correct answer was C were also heckled.

If indicating compromises control of the vehicle like on a small roundabout or risks a collision, then it is not practical and not required.

A bit like stopping on an amber light, it is required if safe and practical to do so.

Two sided

Tyres have two sides and if the inside edge is wearing out prematurely a driver might not know about it until a mechanic informs them or the tyre fails.

This is because their lazy or ineffective approach is to only visually look at their tyres.

This is why we teach drivers to rub their hands across a tyres flat surface to feel for irregular wear.

High and Low

The sales team from Nu Farm completed a 4WD High Range and Low Range course with us.

The dirt circuit at Willowbank was used in the morning and then our property at Boonah was used in the afternoon.

One participant admitted they thought it was going to be boring and within 10 minutes they realised the day was much different to what was expected.

The Triton was frightened

At our 4WD off-road course near Boonah the innocuous and shallow looking dam hides a deep hole where many vehicles have been bogged before. Gravity did its thing and the driver looked worried as the vehicle jumped in.

Swapsies

I didn’t know this was possible.

The speed camera operator was charged with dangerous driving and his employers vehicle (the speed monitoring vehicle) was impounded.

However the speed camera vehicle was released and the camera operators personal vehicle was swapped in (even though it was not used in the incident).

A 67-year-old Road Safety Commission employee is accused of driving recklessly as he passed a road train in his speed camera car in WA's Wheatbelt, causing an oncoming vehicle to swerve off the road.
