A Real Owner's Review: The Good, The Minor Hiccups & Experience So Far
We ordered and purchased our Canning new in 2025. We drove from Darwin to Coomera to pick it up in September last year tenting our way there and glamping our way back.
Why the Canning?
We’d considered a lot of options for campers prior to settling on the Canning. We wanted comfort, reliability, light weight, good customer and after sales service, and we wanted something that was tougher than we’d likely ever really need. We also wanted elegant simplicity.
As a retired fitter and mechanical engineer, I was impressed with the chassis design and construction and the mechanical and electronic components used by hitch in their camper builds. Proudly all Aussie made and the quality (and pride from the manufacturer) really shines through.
It’s really nice knowing that this camper is far more capable than our car (currently a QF Pajero Sport 4x4) when it comes to off-road needs.
The Canning tracks flawlessly on its air suspension handles the big hits with ease and we love the simplicity of levelling the camper when setting up camp by just flicking some switches.
Since the fuel crisis we’re currently mainly using it for local trips away from our home (Darwin Rural), but in many ways, they’ve been more satisfying than the longer road trips, cos we get longer to enjoy the camper itself and we literally hitch up and go, whereas before, with tents, fridges, eskies etc…we may have not have gone as often.
Now the negatives (and they’re minor).
There have been some hiccups along the way, the Redarc Manager 30 (BMS display unit) has failed twice, and the Redarc Inverter remote switch has failed once. In each case, we simply reached out directly to Redarc and they had it sorted within days under warranty.
Hitch Campers could have sorted this on our behalf (and they did offer the option) but we agreed that living in Darwin, it was easier and quicker to deal direct with Redarc ourselves.
It seems we may have been victims of a faulty batch and Redarc offered first class customer backup.
I should add that nothing made by Hitch Campers has let us down and they’ve been amazing with their after sales relationship.
Tim checks in from time to time simply to say hi and ask how things are going with the camper. I don’t know many product manufacturers / suppliers who do that!
Probably of no relevance to many…, an added plus with this little camper for us is its ability to be our “cyclone kit”.
We keep it in a large shed at home and if the power and water go out (common in cyclones) we have this as our backup!!
We had two cyclones this wet in Darwin and both times we had the Canning as backup when mains power and water went out.
My wife loves this camper…maybe too much. I’ve gotta be careful with it out bush in case I hurt it. I don’t think they can be hurt…but it speaks to the quality of the thing cos she really likes good quality things!
The world is currently going crazy, so it’s nice to have the means to go bush comfortably and enjoy the sanest thing going. The natural environment.
10 out of 10 from us!!
