AutoGrab just made a significant move in the Australian automotive tech space.

The data intelligence company has acquired AdTorque Edge's website division — a portfolio of more than 500 Australian dealer websites. Combined with Dealer Studio (acquired last year), AutoGrab now has a serious footprint across dealership digital infrastructure.

→ AutoGrab already serves 1,000+ dealerships with vehicle valuations and market analytics
→ AdTorque Edge retains its advertising and marketing services — this is a focused carve-out
→ The $230M-valued company raised $A80M earlier this year to accelerate expansion into the UK and Asia-Pacific

For dealers, the pitch is continuity plus capability — existing sites stay business as usual, with AutoGrab's tech layer coming in behind it.

The consolidation of dealer digital infrastructure is accelerating. Worth keeping an eye on where this heads next.

Australian franchised dealers are finally getting some government attention — and it's long overdue.

The federal government has released a consultation paper aimed at legislating protections for new car dealers, banning unfair trading practices by manufacturers. Both the AADA and MTAA have backed the move, calling it "tangible progress."

"Australian new car dealers need protection from the exploitation by multinational car manufacturers." — AADA CEO James Voortman

→ Over 64,000 people are employed across nearly 4,000 franchised dealerships nationally
→ Dealers have long faced unilateral contract changes, threats of termination, and pressure to absorb losses
→ PM Albanese put it plainly: to protect consumers, you first have to protect dealers

A consultation paper is a step in the right direction — but until it's legislated, dealers remain exposed. The hard work is still ahead.

Dealer Principal — Melbourne.

Three sites, one brand, and a business that needs a leader on the floor, not behind a desk.

Our client is a long-established dealer group operating three dealerships across Melbourne, each located about 30 minutes apart. The bones are good — capable managers at every site and fixed ops well covered. What's missing is the right operator at the top.

What it takes:
→ Proven DP or GM experience, ideally across multiple sites
→ Deep used-car capability — non-negotiable; that's where the money is right now
→ Hands-on, visible leadership — in with the team and out in the community
→ Commercial sharpness across sales, F&I and aftermarket

The package flexes for the right operator, with genuine upside as the business performs.

The world's biggest car company chairman still feels "very alone" on EVs.

Akio Toyoda has again spoken out about the industry's rush toward battery-electric vehicles — and his position hasn't softened. While rivals race toward full-BEV lineups, Toyota continues backing hybrids, PHEVs, hydrogen, and conventional engines in parallel.

"Everybody shifting to EV, that was the biggest fear for me."

→ Toyota's multi-pathway approach is a deliberate strategy, not slow-footedness
→ Global EV momentum is cooling — the numbers are starting to back Toyoda's caution
→ Australia's buying patterns (hybrid-heavy, BEV-light) suggest local consumers largely agree

For the Australian market, where the RAV4 hybrid remains a perennial bestseller and buyers are still warming to full EVs, Toyota's philosophy continues to land well.

When the chairman of the world's largest automaker says the industry got ahead of itself — it's worth sitting with that.

Chery just had its best May ever — and Australia is a big part of the story.

The Chinese manufacturer delivered 247,823 vehicles globally last month, up 20.5% year-on-year. Export volumes hit a record 181,871 units — an 80.5% jump — marking three consecutive months of record exports. NEV sales cracked 100,000 units for the second straight month.

Here in Australia, Chery recorded 4,401 sales in May — up 84% on the same month last year.

→ The global numbers are striking enough, but the local figure is the one worth watching for anyone in the Australian automotive industry
→ NEV growth of 58.8% globally signals electrification is no longer a slow burn for this brand — it's the engine of their expansion
→ European growth of 230% (with NEV deliveries up 570%) suggests Chery's international playbook is maturing fast
→ They're now past 1.1 million vehicles YTD — the fastest they've ever hit that milestone

Chinese brands are reshaping the competitive landscape, and the talent and workforce implications for Australian dealers and distributors are real. Worth keeping a close eye on.

This car is polarising — but this might explain why.

The Ferrari Luce is the first Ferrari ever designed by a team outside Maranello. Ferrari handed the exterior and cabin to LoveFrom — the creative studio founded by former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson.

The brief was simplification. Six months of silence. No slideshows. Just two books laying out a vision that ended up being pretty close to what you see today.

→ The dashboard is machined from a single solid piece of aluminium
→ The gear shifter is machined from glass with an LED inside
→ The instrument binnacle moves with the steering wheel — so your view never shifts
→ Almost zero components carried over from a previous Ferrari. Everything from scratch.

It's genuinely different. Whether that's good or bad probably depends on what you think Ferrari should be doing in 2026.

What do you think about the Luce? Drop it below.

The Pentagon just added BYD and Nio to its Chinese military blacklist – and the list of automotive names on it is growing fast.

The US DoD's 1260H list now covers 188 companies, including battery makers CALB Group and EVE Energy, and lidar manufacturer Robosense. Baidu – a major player in autonomous vehicle development – is also among the latest additions.

A few things worth noting for the Australian industry:

→ The blacklist restricts US firms from cooperating with listed companies – it doesn't directly affect BYD's operations here or in most other markets
→ BYD continues to expand its Australian presence, with models like the Atto 3 and Dolphin actively competing in the EV market
→ The broader impact may be felt in global supply chain decisions and autonomous vehicle tech development, given how interconnected the industry has become
→ Neither BYD nor Nio has issued a public statement in response

Fair to say the geopolitical backdrop to China's EV push isn't getting any simpler. For those of us watching the Australian market, it's a reminder that the vehicles landing on our shores are carrying a lot more context than just a price tag.
