Please take extra care on our roads this long weekend. Every life matters. Let’s all do our part to make sure everyone gets home safely.
This has been one of Victoria's worst weekends on our roads in recent memory.
Since Friday, nine people have lost their lives across eight separate fatal collisions. Every one of those lives mattered. Every crash has left families, friends, first responders and communities dealing with unimaginable heartbreak.
⬛Brighton East - A motorcyclist and driver died following a collision at South Road and Olive Street. A child passenger was taken to hospital.
⬛Blairgowrie - A 26-year-old man died after a motorcycle crashed into a tree, while another man remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
⬛Werribee (Heaths Road) - A man died when his ute left the road and struck a tree.
⬛Maryborough - A man died in a two-car collision, with three others injured.
⬛Footscray - A motorcyclist died in a collision with a car.
⬛Dennington - A 75-year-old woman lost her life after being struck while using a pedestrian crossing.
⬛Healesville - A motorcyclist died following a collision on the Black Spur.
⬛Werribee - A 19-year-old motorcyclist has died in hospital after being seriously injured in a collision last month.
There is no single message that explains all of these tragedies. But there is one reality that cannot be ignored: far too many people are not making it home.
Whether you're behind the wheel, on a motorcycle or crossing the road, take extra care. Drive to the conditions, stay alert and look out for one another.
Motorcycle Awareness Month may be over, but the need to look out for riders isn't. Before you turn, merge or enter an intersection, take that extra moment and make sure a rider isn't there.
For riders, slow down, ride to the conditions and within your limits.
