This week at Hi Comp.

This gorgeous Ford XB Falcon in for a dyno tune.

With its 434 cubic inch Clevor engine and Holley 1050 Dominator carby, this beast was always going to be a lot of fun.

The carby posed some challenges, as it’s essentially a race carby, it was a lot of hard work to run the engine lean enough at light throttle, yet rich enough to feed the engine at wide open throttle.
We got there in the end with many jet changes, and air bleed changes, having the carby on and off no less than six times.
The MSD programable ignition also copped a good going over with the laptop, to get it just right at all loads.

This week at Hi Comp.

This Mazda RX7 Drift car in for a Dyno tune.

With its LS1 carbureted engine controlled by an MSD early 2D ignition controller, this job was always going to be lots of fun.
That is, until some electrical gremlins got in the way before we could finish the tune.

The Hi Comp team sprung into action and it was all hands on deck to figure out the problem on a tight deadline, as the car is competing at an event this weekend.

A melted starter cable, and a bad ignition circuit turned out to be the problem, and my boys were right on top of it.
Special thanks to Dimitri and Jacob for getting things done.
Thanks to Karen for the organising a few cars to be shuffled around to make some time for the boys to do our thing.

We got there in the end, with ignition and carby dialed right in . Should be a different car now on the racetrack.

This week at Hi Comp.

It’s not always about street machines and muscle cars here at Hi Comp.
At the end of the day, we are a tune shop, and that means,… well… tuning.

This Nissan Patrol is gearing up for a lap around Australia towing a big ass caravan.
The owner has installed a brand new LS3 crate motor, to replace the tired old straight six Nissan petrol engine.

Tuning for maximum load towing requires a different strategy than for a light weight race car or a passenger car.
More attention must be paid to timing re**rd, knock sensor sensitivity, air temperature re**rd, and any engine protection strategies.
You have to think, “what is the most extreme conditions that this engine would be subjected to. Like extremes of sustained 45 plus degrees of ambient temperature whilst pulling three tons up a long hill etc.

I think we got the balance right.

This week at Hi Comp.

A huge thank you to Cameron from CJ Performance Auto Electrical for helping Jacob wire in his very first Haltech ecu.

Cameron’s guidance and patience helped Jacob get the job done right, and Cameron’s help was truly a tremendous gift.

Jacob is now well on his way to being able to tune his own car, both on the dyno, and on the road.

We hope this will be the start of a life long skill, that any performance mechanic must master.

Thank you Cameron. A true legend.

This week at Hi Comp.

This sharp looking Ford XY in for a dyno tune.

This is an all too familiar story of a car that was built some years ago, to a very high standard, yet somehow missed the most important component, that is absolutely nessesary, to finish off a quality build. The dyno tune.

After about 5 years of putting up with pinging at about half throttle (mid load), the safest thing to do is just to back off, and this is exactly what the owner has been doing for a long time. Finally enough was enough, and now the XY found itself in Hi Comp’s workshop.

A full day’s work later, and this is the result.
No pinging, correct fuel ratios and more power.

This week at Hi Comp.

We fixed a Time Machine this week.

How’s this for pure 70’s nostalgia?
Everyone who saw this Holden HZ Sh***in Wagon had an opinion, and everybody loved it.
Driving it around the road test track had everyone beeping their horns, big smiles and thumbs up out the windows. Stopping at the fuel station drew comments like “sick bro”, and “You Beaudy”

So maybe we haven’t all lost our sense of humour.
Maybe we’re still proud to remember the past. Maybe we’re all still glad that that’s how things were back then, and that those who try to erase history, and tell us that we we should all be ashamed, are the ones that are wrong.

Thank you Stewart for handing us such a blast from the past to work on.
It’s an iconic machine, and you’ve got the attitude to suit. Don’t ever change.

This week at Hi Comp.

A huge thank you to all the Hi Comp crew, clients and supporters who came down to the drags at Sydney Dragway on Wednesday night.

Thank you to Ian Tolmie for the fantastic opportunity to race your car .
We have some work to do with mechanical traction, and traction control in the ECU software

It was a blast running 11.5 at just a tick under 130 mph.

Best of all was just having everyone there, making it a great experience.

This week at Hi Comp

The Torana we tuned last week managed a 10.99 at Sydney Dragway on Wednesday, he was also able to back it up with another 10.94 @ 124mph on the next run.

This time was achieved by just listening to, and taking on board advice from professionals in the industry, without spending any extra money from one week to the next.

The driver’s careful attention and reaction to what the car is trying to tell him played a massive role in getting from 11.1 down to 10.9.

A big thanks to Anthony Fenton for going down to the track and being of assistance to Joe, and helping him on the night.

Congratulations Joe on your achievement.

This week at Hi Comp.

This LJ Torana turned out to be a real firecracker.

We tuned it a few weeks back, now it’s on our dyno again for a bit of a touch up, after having some fuel system changes.

The 355 stroker made just over 400 RWHP, then went to the drags that very night, and ran an 11.002 at 122 mph.
