Gear oils and transmission fluids are designed to do different jobs.
Automatic transmission fluid behaves more like a hydraulic fluid, supporting controlled friction, hydraulic pressure, heat management, and smooth operation inside automatic systems. Gear oils are designed for high-load environments where strong film protection is needed under pressure.
The blog also notes that some fluids are designed around specific requirements, such as Dexron and Mercon-style specifications used in certain older-generation automatic transmissions and power steering systems.
Using the correct fluid matters because different systems rely on different lubrication properties and performance characteristics.
