👀 THIS IS A COVER-UP, NOT A REPAIR!

I've seen some questionable repairs over the years, but this one's certainly up there!

🔧 Front loop: Snapped off ! The front of the horse float is no longer connected to the A-frame. And someone's tried covering the damage with silicone!

🔧 Rotten timber: Expanding foam stuffed into the rotten sections, with more silicone over the top.

🔧 Front floor: Rotten timber, Liquid Nails and, you guessed it… MORE SILICONE! 😂

And just when you think you've seen enough, have a look at what we uncover towards the end of the video!

Silicone doesn't reconnect broken steel. Expanding foam doesn't restore rotten timber. And Liquid Nails won't make a rotten floor safe again!

This isn't just a dodgy repair. We're talking about serious structural damage on a horse float that's supposed to safely transport horses down the road.

There's a massive difference between fixing a problem and simply hiding it!

26 years working on horse floats and I'm still finding things that leave me shaking my head.

⚠️ BUYING A SECOND-HAND HORSE FLOAT? THIS COULD EASILY GO UNNOTICED!

Here's a good example of why regular servicing and inspections are so important.

Most horse owners wouldn't give these suspension components a second thought. They're tucked away underneath the float, usually covered in years of dirt and dust.

🔧 In this video we're looking at the rocker arms, pivot pins, bushes, spring shackles and associated hardware.

These components are constantly working every time you tow your float.

Over time, pins and bushes wear, movement develops and components can deteriorate without the owner even realising.

The worrying part?

You could buy a second-hand float, look underneath, see everything still in place and assume it's all good.

Just because it's still attached doesn't mean it's in good or safe.

A proper inspection can pick up problems before they turn into expensive repairs or potentially dangerous failures.

🔧 THE GIDGIE FLOATS APPRENTICE IS BACK AT IT!

Thought she'd lend a hand with a bit of wiring today…

Pretty sure she's got the wire stripping side of things under control! 😂

Might have to keep a closer eye on this apprentice… and yes, the tape's gone too! 🤣

💪 FROM A BACKBREAKER TO A ONE-FINGER PUSH!

Ever struggled to lift a heavy tailgate ramp?

Today at Gidgie Floats we fitted gas struts to this trailer tailgate.

🔧 Started with 44 kg of lifting effort.

🔧 Custom brackets made and gas struts fitted.

✅ Finished with just 13 kg of lifting effort!

Now I can lift it with my foot and close it with a push from one finger!

This one's a trailer, but the same principle can be applied to horse float tailgates and other heavy ramps.

Sometimes a simple modification makes a massive difference.

⚠️ AN OVERLOOKED HAZARD IN HORSE FLOAT DESIGN!

Some centre dividers have all the fancy features — sliding and adjusting to create different-sized bays.

But there's one important safety feature that can be overlooked.

What's actually stopping the divider from lifting off its pivot points?

A horse pushing upwards against the divider could lift it out of its mounting points, potentially pushing it towards the roof before it drops to the floor.

Now imagine that happening while travelling with horses on board.

🔧 THE FIX?

A simple, locking pin below the pivot point prevents the divider from lifting out of its mounting.

It's a small modification that can make a big difference to horse safety.

After 26 years working on horse floats, it's often the simplest things that deserve a closer look.

😂 YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT CRAWLED OUT OF OUR SCRAP BIN! 👀

Spotted in their natural habitat, right where they came from! 😂

This is what happens to some of the leftover steel from horse float rust repairs and complete rebuilds here at Gidgie Floats.

A plasma cutter, a welder, and a scrap bin full of possibilities!

Nothing wrong with giving old steel a second life. 🔧

💧 95 LITRES OF WATER ON BOARD! 🐴

Another handy modification completed at Gidgie Floats!

This horse float came in for a complete water system retrofit.

We fitted a 95L AL-KO water tank with a 12V SHURFO pump.

🔧 Fabricated and fitted mounting brackets, installed the tank, external filler, breather, Anderson plug and pump.

In this video, we take you through the installation, show you how everything is fitted and finish with a demonstration of the system working.

A practical addition for anyone travelling, competing or camping with their horses.

🐴 Do you carry water on your horse float, or is it something you'd like to have fitted?

☀️ 4 METRES OF SHADE FOR THIS HORSE FLOAT!

This 5th wheeler horse float came into Gidgie Floats for some repairs following storm damage.

We also fitted a new 4-metre Fiamma awning.

Here's a quick look at winding it out, setting up the support legs and the finished job.

We've fitted plenty of these Fiamma awnings over the years. Good-quality gear, practical and they look smart on a horse float.

A great addition for those long days away competing or camping with your horses.

🕷️ EVER WONDERED WHAT'S HIDING INSIDE YOUR HORSE FLOAT BRAKES? 😂

Check out the size of this redback spider we found living behind a brake drum!

Imagine reaching in there without looking first! 😳

Just another reason to be careful if you're doing a service on your float.

👀 15MM OF BODY FILLER OVER RUST — WOULD YOU CALL THIS A REPAIR?

Someone had previously covered the rusted steel on this horse float with body filler, sanded it back and painted straight over it.

In places, the filler was up to 15mm thick!

The problem? The rust was still there, continuing to eat away at the steel underneath.

We ended up cutting away the lower sections on BOTH sides, repairing the rust around the chassis rails, welding in new steel sheeting and painting the areas that would be hidden behind the kickboards.

There's nothing wrong with a little body filler used correctly.

But piling it over rotten steel and painting over it isn't repairing rust. It's hiding it.

🐴 Would you have expected this much rust to be hiding underneath the paint?
