Every road death is one too many.

The latest figures from the National Road Safety Data Hub show 1,325 people lost their lives on Australian roads in the year ending 30 June 2026 – a national toll that has increased in every one of the past five years.

Australia is working towards the goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2050 but reaching this goal will require more than traditional approaches. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), automated driving systems, connected vehicles and smart infrastructure are creating new opportunities to prevent crashes before they happen and make our roads safer for everyone.

Registrations are now open for CCAT’s next stakeholder event which will be held in Perth on Wednesday 26 August 2026, delivered in partnership with RAC WA.

The event will bring together leaders from government, industry and research to explore how connected and automated transport can improve road safety outcomes across Australia. Discussions will focus on the role of these technologies in strengthening road safety, supporting a coordinated national approach to innovation and deployment, and the importance of community trust and social legitimacy in enabling safe and effective adoption.

Attendees will hear from a range of experts including Peter Woronzow, Director General of the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (WA), Adrian Warner, Road Safety Commissioner, WA Road Safety Commission and Robert Slocombe, CEO of RAC WA.

This National Road Safety Week, we acknowledge the ongoing work of road safety advocates, industry leaders, governments and communities across Australia working toward a future where everyone gets home safe.

At the Centre for Connected and Automated Transport (CCAT), we recognise the potential of connected and automated transport technologies to reduce road trauma, improve situational awareness, minimise human error and support safer outcomes for all road users.

We also acknowledge the tireless advocacy of Peter Frazer OAM and the incredible work of the SARAH Group, whose mission continues to drive important national conversations around road safety, accountability and the urgent need for action.

Peter contributed a powerful article to CCAT’s thought leadership series ‘The Commute’, exploring how connected and automated transport, data and coordinated national leadership can help build a safer future for Australia. He highlighted that “Connected and automated transport opportunities are literally at our fingertips and offer the most significant opportunity to reduce fatalities and serious injuries since the introduction of the seatbelt.”
