Aiming to move Aus and NZ safely and successfully into the era of connected and automated transport.

Self-driving vehicles will make driving easier, allow people to be more productive and offer greater mobility to a wider range of people than ever before. They will also help improve road safety, reduce emissions, and ease congestion. As a result, self-driving vehicles will provide significant economic, environmental and social benefits, including improving social inclusion. The key thrust of the Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative is to build momentum by rapidly exploring the impacts and requirements of this new technology in a truly Australian context and making recommendations on ways to safely and successfully bring self-driving vehicles to Australian roads.

Last week we brought together some of WA's most influential transport leaders for a CCAT stakeholder event ‘Transport technologies for safer roads’ in Perth, and the room was full.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to RAC WA for their support in bringing the event together.

RAC WA Group CEO Rob Slocombe opened with a sobering figure: 146 lives lost on WA roads so far this year, the highest year-to-date toll in over a decade, putting the state on track to pass 200 deaths for the first time since 2008. His challenge to the room: will new technologies genuinely improve people's lives, or just shift the risk around?

Rahila David then moderated a panel with Peter Woronzow ( Director General, WA Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure), Adrian Warner (WA Road Safety Commissioner) and Professor Teresa Senserrick (Director, WA Road Safety Research Centre at UWA), digging into where the fastest wins might be and what we need to consider.
