AGA FUN FACT FRIDAY!

DID YOU KNOW? A LABORATORY ACCIDENT HELPED INSPIRE THE MODERN WINDSCREEN! 🧪

The history of automotive safety glass has an unexpected connection to a dropped laboratory flask!

In the early 1900s, French chemist Édouard Bénédictus was developing what would become an important innovation in automotive glass — laminated safety glass.

According to a widely told historical account, Bénédictus noticed that a glass flask had cracked after being dropped, but its fragments remained together because of a thin film left inside.

This observation is often credited with inspiring his work on laminated glass.

Today, laminated windscreens generally contain a plastic interlayer between sheets of glass, helping hold fragments together when the glass breaks.

💡 From an unexpected laboratory discovery to an important development in automotive history!

The story is a fascinating reminder of how innovation can emerge from the most surprising places.

🚗 THE FUTURE OF AUTOGLASS IS MOVING FAST!

A major development in the UK is putting mobile ADAS recalibration in the spotlight, with Autoglass announcing a nationwide rollout of technology designed to bring recalibration services directly to customers.

As modern vehicles become increasingly reliant on cameras and advanced driver assistance systems, accurate calibration remains a critical part of safe windscreen replacement.

What could this development mean for the Australian autoglass industry?

At the AGA, we're keeping an eye on global innovations and what they could mean for our members.

🚗 DID YOU KNOW? | UNDERSTANDING ADAS CALIBRATION

What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?

Many modern vehicles incorporate Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which may use cameras and sensors to support functions such as lane departure warnings, traffic sign recognition and autonomous emergency braking.

Some of these systems use cameras positioned near or behind the vehicle's windscreen.

Depending on the vehicle's design and manufacturer specifications, windscreen replacement may involve additional procedures relating to these systems.

🔍 WHAT IS STATIC CALIBRATION?

Static calibration generally involves a stationary vehicle and specialised equipment, which may include targets positioned at specified distances and angles.

The equipment, environment and procedures vary depending on the vehicle and system involved.

🔍 WHAT IS DYNAMIC CALIBRATION?

Dynamic calibration generally involves operating the vehicle under specified driving conditions, allowing relevant systems to complete a calibration or learning procedure.

Conditions and requirements vary between vehicle manufacturers and models.

Some systems may require static calibration, dynamic calibration, a combination of both, or other manufacturer-specified procedures.

🎯 WHY DOES CAMERA POSITIONING MATTER?

Certain ADAS functions rely on information gathered by cameras and sensors.

The positioning and alignment of these components can influence how the system interprets information from the surrounding driving environment.

Vehicle manufacturers may specify procedures for checking or calibrating these systems following certain repairs, including windscreen replacement.

📋 WHAT ABOUT CALIBRATION DOCUMENTATION?

Motorists may wish to ask their repair provider whether their vehicle has any manufacturer-specified ADAS requirements associated with the work being undertaken.

Where calibration is performed, documentation may provide useful information about the procedures undertaken and the reported outcome.

💡 DID YOU KNOW?

ADAS technology and calibration procedures are not identical across all vehicles.

For vehicle-specific information, motorists and repair professionals should refer to the relevant manufacturer's guidance.

⛈️ SUMMER STORMS ARE COMING – IS YOUR WINDSCREEN READY? 🚗

Australian summer brings sunshine, road trips and unpredictable weather, including severe thunderstorms, hail and flying debris.

Your windscreen plays an important role in vehicle safety, and existing chips or cracks can become a bigger concern when severe weather strikes.

Before the next storm:

✅ Check your windscreen for chips and cracks.

✅ Make sure your wiper blades are in good condition.

✅ Keep your windscreen clean for maximum visibility.

✅ Where possible, park undercover when hailstorms are forecast.

✅ Have any windscreen damage assessed by a qualified autoglass professional.

Caught in a hailstorm? Seek safe shelter when possible, avoid driving through dangerous conditions and inspect your vehicle for damage once the storm has passed.

🔍 Remember: Even a small chip deserves attention. Early professional assessment may help prevent further damage and determine whether repair or replacement is required.

The AGA encourages motorists to prioritise vehicle safety and seek professional advice when dealing with damaged automotive glass.

Stay storm-ready. Stay glass-safe.

Automotive glass enters a new technological era.

The automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by electrification, autonomous driving, and the evolution of vehicle interiors. As vehicles integrate increasingly advanced technologies, glass surfaces are taking center stage. Did you know that your roof can be equipped with solar cells to recharge your vehicle, that our Digital Curtain can act as a shade to protect you from the sun or prying eyes, or that interior glazing solutions can merge aesthetical and functional needs (FeelInGlass range)? Far from being merely a passive shield against the weather, wind, stone impacts, and UV rays, the windshield is reinventing itself to become the interactive heart of the cockpit: an intelligent, smart and high-tech interface connecting the car, its passengers, and their environment.

Two innovations enhancing the driving experience

Among these breakthroughs, the Head-Up Display (HUD) shows essential information — such as speed, navigation instructions, warning messages, or driver-assistance signals — directly into the driver’s field of view, as information is projected directly on the windshield.

This dynamic wave of innovation is further exemplified by the Black Band Display. This unique technology transforms the bottom of the windshield into a unified, seamless display area stretching from pillar to pillar. A high-precision P-polarisation coating, located on the lower edge of the windshield, selectively reflects light from the head-up display unit. Critical driving data is thus projected directly into the driver’s line of sight, allowing them to keep their eyes on the road. It delivers unmatched image clarity and precision regardless of weather or lighting conditions. Last but not least, ensures the information projected remains perfectly bright and visible, even when you wear polarized lenses. This breakthrough technology is already in industrial production.
