This week, ENQA is coordinating a workshop for the PAQAA Interim Technical Unit, hosted by the Association of African Universities (AAU), as part of the HAQAA 3 initiative.

The workshop forms part of a broader training programme through which ENQA is sharing expertise on the coordination of external quality assurance agency reviews. At the same time, the Technical Unit is advancing the development of its own procedures for coordinating reviews across Africa.

This collaboration represents an important step in strengthening quality assurance frameworks and supporting sustainable capacity-building within the African higher education sector. ☑️

Last week, members of ENQA’s pool of experts came together to exchange experiences and reflections on the role of the review chair, with contributions by Teresa Sánchez Chaparro, Ronny Heintze, Nora Skaburskienė and Tue Vinther-Jørgensen, who shared their insights and practical perspectives.

One of the takeaways from the discussion was the idea that an effective chair is simultaneously the motor, compass, glue, and seal of the review panel:

🚀 The motor keeps the review moving forward and focused on its objectives.
🧭 The compass provides direction, guiding the panel through the review process and helping it navigate complex discussions and evidence.
🤝 The glue brings the panel together by facilitating deliberations, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that members work effectively as a team.
✅ The seal safeguards the quality and integrity of the review, ensuring that both the process and its outcomes are rigorous and robust.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of the key documents that guide the chair's work:
