Important notice to anyone with Botswana-registered cars currently in South Africa

Please take this seriously.

If you have a Botswana-registered vehicle that has been in South Africa for a long period (especially over a year), and you as the owner are in Botswana while the vehicle is being used by someone else in South Africa, there may be customs risks involved.

From what I’ve learned, South African customs (SARS) can view foreign-registered vehicles as temporarily imported, which means:

• The vehicle is expected to stay in South Africa for a limited period only
• It is usually linked to the person who brought it into the country
• It should not be used as if it is permanently based in South Africa without proper import procedures

If the vehicle has overstayed or is being used long-term by other people while the owner is not in South Africa, customs may see this as a violation of temporary import conditions.

Possible consequences can include:

• Vehicle detention or seizure
• Fines and penalties
• Demands for customs duty and VAT
• Complications at border posts or roadblocks

This is especially important now with the new foreign vehicle declaration system.

It is strongly advised that owners gather all their vehicle documents, check when and how the car entered South Africa, and contact SARS Customs or visit the nearest border/customs office to regularize their vehicle status before facing enforcement.

Rather check now than lose your car later.
