Another place in Canada with a Portuguese name. Do you know what "fogo" means? Comment A, B or C before you read on.
The answer is B: fire. The Portuguese named it "y do fogo", fire island. Fogo Island sits about 15 km off Newfoundland's north-east coast.

Bonus: it has company. Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America (excluding Greenland), was first named by the Portuguese, from "spera", hope. And Labrador is thought to come from "lavrador", a landowner. Three Portuguese names in one province.

Most Canadians find out about this number a bit too late.

It's called the NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal), your Portuguese tax number. You need it to buy property in Portugal, to open a bank account, even to set up your internet.

The good news: you can usually get it from Canada, before you ever get on a plane.

One place in Canada has a Portuguese name. Can you guess which one? Comment A, B or C before you read on.
The answer is A: Labrador. The name is thought to come from João Fernandes, an Azorean "lavrador" (a landowner) who explored the North Atlantic around 1500.

Bonus fact: in the 2021 Census, 448,305 Canadians reported Portuguese origin, including 300,600 in Ontario and 64,385 in Québec.
