Alberta's government has introduced new legislation aimed at removing politics and ideology from classrooms while expanding provincial oversight of schools.

Bill 25 would require teachers and school boards to remain "neutral" and "impartial" in classroom instruction, limit flag displays to the Canadian and Alberta flags with certain exemptions, and give the education minister greater authority over decisions such as school names and superintendent contracts. While the government says the changes will strengthen civic pride and keep classrooms focused on education, critics argue the bill is overly restrictive and could make it more difficult for educators to do their jobs.

Canada is heading to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after a dramatic stoppage-time victory over South Africa.

Fans erupted in celebration across Canada as Stephen Eustaquio scored a late winner to secure a 1-0 knockout-stage victory in Los Angeles. The win sends Canada into the Round of 16, where it will face either the Netherlands or Morocco on July 4. The match also marked the tournament debut of captain Alphonso Davies, who returned from injury to make a second-half appearance.

The FIFA World Cup is driving record-breaking transit use across Metro Vancouver, with TransLink recording its busiest day in more than six years.

TransLink says nearly 1.4 million boardings and about 859,500 trips were recorded on June 24 during Canada's World Cup match against Switzerland at BC Place. Ridership was up nearly 20 per cent over a typical day, with SeaBus boardings jumping 81 per cent and SkyTrain usage increasing almost 30 per cent. Transit officials say the tournament continues to highlight the vital role public transportation plays in moving large crowds across the region.

Oil prices have fallen sharply following the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, but experts warn the relief may not last.

Brent crude has dropped back to around US$72 per barrel as global oil supplies recover and Iran prepares to boost exports under a temporary ceasefire agreement. While the decline is expected to ease fuel costs over the coming weeks, analysts say depleted global inventories and rising demand could push oil and gasoline prices higher again later this summer.

Health Canada says nearly all Canadians linked to the MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak have now completed their monitoring and isolation periods.

Officials say 34 Canadians who may have been exposed to Andes hantavirus through the cruise ship outbreak have finished their precautionary isolation. Only one remaining contact and the sole confirmed Canadian case remain under monitoring until June 26. The infected individual, whose case marked the first detection of Andes hantavirus in Canada, has already recovered, while public health officials report no additional confirmed cases.

Cristiano Ronaldo silenced his critics with a record-breaking performance as Portugal cruised to a dominant World Cup victory over Uzbekistan.

After facing questions following Portugal's disappointing draw with Congo, the 41-year-old responded with two goals in a 5-0 rout, becoming the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments. Ronaldo was named man of the match as Portugal moved to four points in Group K, while coach Roberto Martinez praised his team's composure and experience in bouncing back from early tournament criticism.
