Toyota Canada highlights its growing electrified lineup at Unplug & Drive Event

@ North Bay Toyota

TOYOTA’s multi-pathway approach to electrification provides Canadians with 21 electrified models in a variety of powertrains

By the end of the year, Toyota will offer 4 unique battery-electric vehicle options for sale across Canada

The company has sold more than 35 million electrified vehicles globally, and remains the number one seller of electrified vehicles in Canada

Automotive journalists got to Unplug and Drive the 2026 bZ, bZ Woodland, C-HR, RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid and Prius Plug-in Hybrid in Quebec earlier this month

Toyota is strengthening its position as the industry’s only full-line automaker this year by significantly expanding its selection of zero-emission vehicles. To put its strategy to the most rigorous test, Toyota Canada invited Canadian automotive journalists from coast to coast to unplug and drive – an opportunity to experience the company’s 2026 lineup of all-new battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Toyota Canada’s Unplug and Drive event took place from June 2 to 5 in Quebec – Canada’s number one market for Toyota ZEV sales, accounting for more than one-third of Toyota BEV and PHEV vehicles sold in the country so far in 2026. This endorsement from Quebec drivers has contributed to Toyota Canada’s strong electrified vehicle sales so far this year. To date, Toyota hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric models have accounted for 64 percent of the brand’s total sales in Canada.

“Our strategy has always been to offer Canadians the right products, at the right time,” said Steve Pilkey, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Toyota Canada Inc. “When it comes to electrification, our multi-pathway approach provides our customers with the power of choice. This has allowed us to put more than 660,000 electrified Toyota vehicles on the road in Canada to date. And by the end of this year, Canadians will be able to choose from 21 electrified Toyota models – including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and 4 battery-electric options – to satisfy a variety of needs and lifestyles, backed by Toyota’s reputation for quality, reliability and safety.”

Toyota has been a pioneer and industry leader in vehicle electrification and technology over the past three decades. The experimental all-electric RAV4 EV in 1996 paved the way for the introduction of Toyota’s first hybrid electric vehicle - the Toyota Prius - in 1997, and first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle – the Prius PHV – in 2012. The plug-in hybrid RAV4 Prime was later introduced in 2021, while the debut of Toyota’s first global battery-electric vehicle - the bZ4X - came in 2023. To date, Toyota has sold more than 35 million electrified vehicles globally and remains the number one seller of electrified vehicles in Canada.

To demonstrate the diversity of Toyota’s zero-emission vehicle lineup, journalists at the Unplug and Drive event put five models to the test – ranging from urban-savvy sedans and compact crossovers to adventure-ready SUVs:

The 2026 Toyota C-HR is an all-new, sporty BEV featuring bold design, fun-to-drive performance, and surprising spaciousness and versatility. As Toyota’s new entry-level BEV, Canadians can choose from three value-packed grades. In Canada, the C-HR is available as a front-wheel-drive model to maximize range - offering up to 496 km, or all-wheel-drive options that emphasize power with up to 338 net horsepower.

The 2026 Toyota bZ – Toyota’s core compact electric SUV – offers Canadians a balance of space, design, and all-wheel-drive performance. This refreshed model features a new name, an updated design, up to 50% more power, up to 25% more range (up to 486 km), and faster charging times. Canadians can choose from three grades.

The 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland is Toyota’s all-new rugged electric SUV for Canadians seeking adventure. Its standard all-wheel-drive BEV powertrain offers up to 452 km of range and 375 horsepower, complemented by generous cargo capacity, a 3,500-pound towing rating, and high ground clearance, giving it ultimate capability. Canadians can choose from two grades.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid headlines the latest generation of Canada’s best-selling passenger vehicle. The RAV4 PHEV features Toyota’s 6th-generation plug-in hybrid powertrain – which recently earned AJAC - Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s 2026 Best Green Innovation Award - delivering 324 horsepower and 30% more all-electric range of up to 89 km. For 2026, Toyota expands the options with four PHEV grades, including the first-ever RAV4 GR SPORT developed in partnership with Toyota GAZOO Racing.

The 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Nightshade introduces bold, immediately recognizable styling, featuring 19-inch black-finished alloy wheels, black accents, and other styling cues inside and out. The Prius PHEV delivers an impressive all-electric driving range of up to 72 km and incredible combined hybrid fuel efficiency of 4.5 L/100km. For 2026, Canadians can choose from four sporty PHEV grades.

Attendees also got a close-up look at the all-new, all-electric 2027 Toyota Highlander - Toyota’s first three-row electric SUV and the first mass-market Toyota BEV to be assembled in North America. The Highlander’s impressive powertrain will be offered in both FWD and AWD and will deliver up to 511 km of range – complementing the vehicle’s new, head-turning design and versatile, spacious, and advanced interior. Canadians will be able to choose from several grades when it arrives at Toyota Dealers across the country later this year.

Le Mans victory for Toyota Racing WEC / FIA WEC

TOYOTA RACING overcame challenges during an intense battle through day and night to win an epic 94th 24 Heures du Mans, the third round of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

A crowd of 350,105 fans watched an epic Hypercar contest in one of the closest and most unpredictable Le Mans 24 Hours for many years, which delivered TOYOTA’s sixth win in the legendary French race.

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries completed a nerve-wracking win by just 10.913 secs after 381 laps of relentless competition in their #7 TR010 HYBRID. For Mike and Kamui, it represents a second win after their 2021 triumph, while it is Nyck’s first overall win.

Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa completed a race to remember for TOYOTA RACING with a podium for third place in their #8 TR010 HYBRID, just 20.417secs off the lead.

Despite starting from modest grid positions after a disappointing Hyperpole, the TR010 HYBRIDs used an aggressive early strategy to refuel earlier than their rivals and take advantage of a clear track to gain time. That brought both cars into contention for the top six, and they showed exceptional pace – setting new fastest laps – but setbacks interrupted their progress.

The #7 TR010 HYBRID suffered an early puncture, which left it in a tight midfield battle. But relentless speed, particularly in the morning hours, brought it into the top three with six hours remaining.

Meanwhile, the #8 car led in the early stages thanks to its alternative-fuel strategy. But an off-track moment in the ninth hour, a drive-through penalty around half distance, and a brake drum mounting repair soon after left the #8 crew facing a tough task to return to the front.

A safety car with less than six hours remaining reset the field, giving both cars the opportunity to show their speed and race craft in a four-car battle at the front. With three hours to go, bold overtakes from Brendon and Nyck put TOYOTA RACING into a one-two lead.

The #7 car established a gap at the front, although fuel and tire strategies caused the podium positions to fluctuate over the remaining hours. The #8 battled bravely for second but ultimately had to change tires in the last hour, dropping to third. Kamui kept his cool in the afternoon heat and brought the #7 to the chequered flag, followed soon after by Sébastien in the #8.

The double points scored at Le Mans extends TOYOTA RACING’s advantage in the manufacturers’ World Championship to 36 points, while the #7 crew have taken the lead in the drivers’ standings. The next race comes in just four weeks’ time with the 6 Hours of São Paulo at Interlagos on 12 July.

Quotes:

Kamui Kobayashi (Team Principal and driver, car #7): “It was very challenging for us, but we never gave up. Car #7 has had a lot of second places at Le Mans but finally we got our second win. We have waited so long for this victory and it feels amazing. The whole week was not easy, including the race which was not smooth. We had a puncture early and that made it tough for us. But Mike, Nyck, our engineers and our pit crew did a great job. It was an incredible day. Thank you to everyone who made it happen, including all the fans who make this such a special event.”

Mike Conway (Driver, car #7): “It was a crazy race. I knew we could move forward from our qualifying position, but I just didn't know how far, or how tight the battle would be. Positions were swapping back and forth, and it wasn't until the last couple of hours that we felt we were in with a chance. It has been an amazing job by everyone in the team. Kamui and Nyck were super-fast, they really got us into the fight at the front when it mattered, and credit to the pit crew because they were faultless. Thank you to everyone who has supported us, everyone in Cologne, Higashi-Fuji and at Toyota. This one is really special.”

Nyck de Vries (Driver, car #7): “I am incredibly grateful, relieved and happy to win Le Mans. This is my first time to win here, so I’m delighted. It's been a long journey this week and during the race as well. We had various setbacks and challenges to overcome and, frankly speaking, at times I thought we were out of contention. But it just shows that you can never give up. It all came together and I’m so thankful for all the work the team has done to achieve this incredible milestone.”

Sébastien Buemi (Driver, car #8): “It was an unbelievable race. I am extremely happy for the team. They worked so hard since last year to bring the TR010 HYBRID. For car #7 to win the race is fantastic for everyone. It was amazing for us to be on the podium with them. Even though it is a special moment, I am disappointed because I feel we could have done a bit better. But it was a great job from all the team to get our second win of the year with this car. We will remember this day for a long time because the competition was tough and we came out on top.”

Brendon Hartley (Driver, car #8): “It was an up and down race, as usual here. We led for a long time and had a big gap at one point before the safety car. We had some good luck and some bad luck. Ultimately, it didn’t work out for our car. We fought really hard until the end and my team-mates did a fantastic job. I am genuinely happy for the whole team, for the #7 crew and the drivers. It’s an emotional moment.”

Ryō Hirakawa (Driver, car #8): “It was a long 24 hours and a very tight battle all the way to the end. As a car crew we did our best and we had a good strategy. It wasn’t the perfect race for us but we were still fighting for victory. I’m really happy for the team to get this win with car #7 but I have some mixed feelings because we led for a long time and couldn’t finish the job. We need to celebrate now because car #7 drove a great race and the team worked so hard for this win.”

Le Mans demonstration for liquid hydrogen-fuelled TR LH2 Racing Prototype

Toyota Racing WEC will conduct the first public demonstration drives of its liquid hydrogen-fuelled TR LH2 Racing Prototype next week at the Circuit de la Sarthe, venue for the 94th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The TR LH2 Racing Prototype is based on the same chassis as the TR010 HYBRID Hypercar, which will compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours on 13-14 June. It is intended to advance the development of hydrogen technology in motorsports.

On Thursday 11 June (12:50 pm) and Saturday 13 June (12:45 pm), the TR LH2 Racing Prototype will complete demonstration laps of the 13.626 km Circuit de la Sarthe, bringing the sound and sensation of a hydrogen combustion engine to fans around the circuit. This activity supports Toyota’s continuous development of hydrogen technology and infrastructure and helps build relationships to expand the possibilities of hydrogen through the challenge of motorsports.

TOYOTA has taken on the challenge of hydrogen engine development in motorsports, initially through Rookie Racing’s participation in the Japanese Super Taikyu series with the ORC ROOKIE GR Corolla H2 Concept. This vehicle used gaseous hydrogen from 2021, before the introduction of a liquid hydrogen-powered car in 2023.

The potential of hydrogen engines in rallying was initially showcased in 2022 when the GR Yaris H2 completed demonstration runs on the Ypres Rally, a round of the FIA World Rally Championship. Further development was highlighted when the GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept conducted demonstrations at the 2025 Rally Finland and this year’s Rallye Monte-Carlo.

In 2023, the ORC ROOKIE GR Corolla H2 Concept completed a demonstration lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe, while a hydrogen engine concept car, the GR H2 Racing Concept, was presented to preview a potential future hydrogen category at Le Mans. Since then, the development of the technology intensified, reaching a further milestone with the unveiling of the liquid hydrogen-powered GR LH2 Racing Concept last year at Le Mans. A year later, TOYOTA RACING takes the next step in that journey with the first public demonstration of the TR LH2 Racing Prototype.

Prior to its demonstration laps, the TR LH2 Racing Prototype will be displayed for fans in the Hydrogen Village, an exhibition of hydrogen technology which includes information and vehicles illustrating TOYOTA’s commitment to a carbon-neutral society. The Hydrogen Village will officially open on Wednesday, 10 June.

Peak Performance: TOYOTA Introduces the 2026 GRMN Corolla @ North Bay Toyota

@ North Bay Toyota

The new GRMN Corolla represents the pinnacle of GR Corolla performance

Increased engine torque and chassis enhancements help deliver a more engaging, track-inspired driving experience

Dedicated aerodynamic and suspension components developed through Super Taikyu competition and Nürburgring testing

All-Wheel-Drive control optimized further through extensive Nürburgring development

Driving enthusiasts, rejoice: GAZOO Racing (GR) has unveiled the 2026 GRMN Corolla, the ultimate in GR Corolla performance. This track-oriented compact hatchback was developed under GR’s philosophy of “making better cars starting from motorsport,” and it was engineered so drivers can confidently push it to the limit at the Nürburgring, where Master Driver Akio Toyoda, also known as Morizo, began his driving career. Born from Morizo’s strong desire “to bring back a Corolla that captivates customers,” the GR Corolla has been exhaustively refined.

The 2026 GRMN Corolla will be built at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Motomachi plant in Japan, primarily for North America, Japan and Australia. More information on the full model specifications and Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price will be provided later.

What’s new

The GRMN Corolla represents the ultimate expression of the GR Corolla, engineered to deepen the connection between car and driver and inspire confidence even at the limits of performance. Developed with a singular focus on responsiveness, control and driver engagement, it pursues a wilder, more visceral character through increased engine torque and a series of purpose-built enhancements drawn directly from motorsports competition and intensive circuit testing.

Its development reflects lessons learned through competition in the Super Taikyu series and repeated testing at the Nürburgring, where dedicated aerodynamic parts, suspension components and optimized all-wheel-drive control were honed to help elevate performance.

Inside, the GRMN Corolla continues that driver-first philosophy with an evolved cockpit featuring dedicated seats and a flocked instrument panel, creating a more focused environment designed to help the driver concentrate more fully on the road ahead.

Pushed to the limit to challenge the Nürburgring

In response to Morizo’s directive that “if it bears the GRMN name, it must be able to run the Nürburgring properly,” the GR team developed the GRMN Corolla through intensive Nürburgring testing. The Nürburgring – often called the world’s most demanding circuit – exposes inputs and surface changes that do not appear on ordinary test tracks and brings a car’s weaknesses to light. The team tuned the car so that, from low speeds to full racing speeds and even on rough surfaces, it should respond more in line with the driver’s intentions.

GRMN Corolla development included not only Nürburgring testing but also participation in Japan’s Super Taikyu endurance racing series and extensive verification using the latest driving simulators. Through this extensive testing came unexpected issues. By pushing the vehicle to its limits, the GR team was able to address each issue one by one and pursue a high level of vehicle-driver harmony so the car and driver can continue to communicate even at the limit.

The insights gained during GRMN Corolla development have also been applied to the evolution of the base GR Corolla. For example, the GR Corolla, announced in September 2025, extended the application of structural adhesive on the body by 13.9 metres to a total of 32.67 metres to strengthen the body structure, and it was equipped with a cool air duct to reduce intake air temperature under high-load driving – both measures born from Nürburgring learnings.

Key features of the GRMN Corolla

Aerodynamics refined in Super Taikyu and at the Nürburgring
In Super Taikyu Series races and at the Nürburgring, cars run at high speeds and under high lateral G-forces. To maximize performance in such conditions, it’s essential to keep all four wheels firmly planted.

The GRMN Corolla features exclusively developed aerodynamic performance parts for enhanced road holding. Its hood duct, fender ducts, front side spoilers and rear wing incorporate know-how gained from racing, tested on the hydrogen engine-powered GR Corolla that competes in the Super Taikyu Series.

Based on all-inclusive Super Taikyu Series trial and error, fine-tuning came at the Nürburgring. This effort included adjusting the rear wing angle, which features a five-step adjustment mechanism, in 1-degree increments during driving tests with professional drivers to verify effectiveness and determine the optimal specification.

Dedicated Suspension Tuned through Nürburgring Development
The GRMN Corolla’s suspension employs exclusive front and rear monotube shock absorbers with rebound springs for improved inner-wheel traction during cornering and for enhanced high-speed cornering performance.

The Nürburgring road surface includes environments that induce significant vertical suspension travel beyond that experienced on typical circuits. To ensure high stability for confident driving even in such conditions, extensive Nürburgring test runs facilitated optimization of bump-stop characteristics. The exclusive shock absorbers were developed by adjusting their stroke down to a millimeter at the front and rear for optimal balance.

To improve cornering stability and braking performance, high-grip Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires were added.

The EPS (electric power steering) control program was also to generate the required amount of assistance torque even during cornering under high g-forces. The exclusively tuned 4WD control system provides optimal rear torque distribution during straight-line driving and enhanced stability at the onset of steering input at extremely high speeds.

Internal combustion advancements informed by the hydrogen GR Corolla

GR has been gaining valuable lessons for the evolution of the internal combustion engine by competing in the Super Taikyu Series with a hydrogen engine-powered GR Corolla, as extended, high-load endurance racing helps heighten not only the potential of hydrogen technology but also that of fundamental internal combustion engine components.

Based on insights from Super Taikyu, the GRMN Corolla’s peak engine torque was increased to 302 pound-feet. The development team optimized the GRMN Corolla’s engine characteristics by analyzing the range of engine use during circuit driving, focusing on increasing torque in the 4,000–4,600 rpm mid-speed range, which is crucial for accelerating out of corners.

The GRMN Corolla includes an intercooler spray system to help maintain stable engine output during continuous full-throttle driving, along with the cool-air duct added to the 2026 GR Corolla.

Also, in pursuit of an even higher level of performance and an “untamed energy that captivates customers”, the GRMN Corolla has no rear seats as part of an effort to achieve thorough weight reduction. The power-to-weight ratio has been improved by reducing weight by 30 kilograms compared to the base vehicle, providing customers with an unparalleled driving experience.

Cockpit designed for higher performance

Beyond driving performance, the cockpit is specially crafted for the GRMN Corolla. To allow drivers to fully exploit the car’s potential, seats and the instrument panel were upgraded.

The GRMN Corolla features a semi-bucket sport seats upholstered in black and red Brin Naub suede and synthetic leather, combining premium materials with purposeful lateral support for performance driving. Accented with distinctive GR detailing, the seats reinforce the model’s motorsport-inspired character while delivering a focused, driver-oriented cockpit experience.
