More progress on the old workshop today! 🔨

The upper triangular OSB sections are cut and fitted, Typar HomeWrap installed, and the vinyl siding corner trim is in place.

Just one final 8-foot section left to complete the east wall! Another step closer to getting this old building weather-tight before winter. 💪

Down to the final section of the old workshop’s east wall! 🔨

The old post is repositioned, the wall is back in alignment, and more rotten framing has been removed. Tomorrow we’ll install temporary supports, break out the remaining deteriorated concrete and continue the new concrete and block foundation.

There’s also an old paint-booth extractor enclosure to dismantle!

🔨 Another productive day at the old workshop — single-handedly!

The east wall restoration is really taking shape now.

From a badly distorted, deteriorating wall and failing foundation to new concrete, blockwork, 2×6 framing and OSB sheathing.

Today was all about pushing the new wall forward, fitting the framing and getting more sheathing installed. Next up is closing in the remaining upper sections with OSB before wrapping everything in Typar.

Hard to believe how far this old building has come in just a few weeks. What started as straightening a leaning wall has turned into rebuilding practically the whole thing!

Not bad for one bloke, a pile of reclaimed materials and a determination to save an old building rather than demolish it. 💪

One wall, one section, one day at a time.

🔨 OLD WORKSHOP RESTORATION – ANOTHER BIG DAY! 🧱🏚️

Tools down for Sunday, and another good day’s progress rebuilding the old workshop here in Parham!

We’re finally getting to the bottom of why the east wall had deteriorated so badly over the years.

At some point, previous owners decided to level the original greasy concrete floor by adding approximately 5 inches of fine sand, 5 inches of concrete, and then another 1½-inch topping across a 31 × 16 ft area!

All poured right up against the original timber walls.

Meanwhile, the east side of the building had a nine-foot drop that was never filled, leaving the floor cracked and tilted towards that side. The wall had kicked out at the bottom, progressively worsening towards the corner.

Rather than simply covering everything up again, we’ve been tackling the problems from the ground up.

✅ East-side drop now filled.

✅ New concrete foundations and blockwork progressing.

✅ New 2×6 framing bringing the wall back into line.

✅ OSB sheathing going up to strengthen the structure.

✅ Original heavy timber roof-supporting posts being retained and incorporated into the rebuilt wall.

✅ Old concrete being broken out to expose the original floor beneath.

Today’s work has brought us another step closer to having the entire east wall rebuilt, straight and properly supported.

Next up: more framing and OSB, followed by the remaining five blocks for the next foundation section.

There’s something immensely satisfying about bringing an old building back from the brink, especially when you’re uncovering and correcting decades of questionable alterations along the way.

Not bad for a first-time bricklayer and a determined DIY restoration! 😁

One section at a time. One problem at a time. And we’re getting there!

🚜 OLD WORKSHOP RESTORATION – MAJOR GROUNDWORK PROGRESS!

Another productive day here in Parham, Ontario!

The Kubota has been hard at work around the old workshop, tackling another major stage of the restoration.

First, we moved the vehicles and trailers to make room for the machinery. Then came the trench between the house and garage, ready for the new permanent Hydro electrical supply and internet connection.

The excavator has also been working along the east wall, clearing decades of accumulated soil and broken concrete, exposing the original foundations and moving the old concrete around the north corner as part of the groundwork.

This is all preparation for completing the remaining concrete foundation sections, blockwork and structural repairs.

Next stage: I’ll be breaking out the last of the deteriorated concrete overlay while preserving the sound original slab underneath.

Once that’s finished, the excavator will return to complete the grading, place the remaining fill, spread topsoil and prepare the surrounding ground for grass seed.

It’s dirty, demanding work, but every load of rubble removed and every section of foundation exposed brings this old building another step closer to being restored.

What was once a deteriorating old workshop is gradually being brought back to life, one section at a time.

No shortcuts, just hard work, determination and a great deal of history worth preserving! 🔨🇨🇦

Forms are off, and I cleaned up the concrete edges before it fully cured. I’ve also worked out how to pack beneath the beam and carry the support across the new blockwork to the post.

This is only a rough mock-up, but it’s starting to show how the pieces will come together. There’s still plenty to do before it’s all secured in place.

Today’s progress on the garage restoration.

Built the timber formwork and started pouring a new concrete foundation strip, measuring 10 feet long, 12 inches wide and 4 inches deep, over the original foundation.

Six 30 kg bags of concrete, plenty of elbow grease, and we’re getting somewhere!

Once the concrete has cured, we’ll lay the 8-inch interlocking concrete blocks, ready for the new 2×6 sill plate and wall framing.

Slowly but surely, we’re bringing this old building back to life. One section at a time! 💪
