A vehicle came to us a while ago because the 4X4 system wasn't working.
Before it arrived, approximately $2,500 had already been spent replacing the transfer case module and 4X4 actuator.
The 4X4 still didn't work 😕
We started from the beginning: researched how the circuit was supposed to operate, tested the power and ground signals, and traced the wiring.
The problem?
A broken wire about 8 inches from the connector.
This is why we're such big believers in diagnosing a problem before replacing parts!
A trouble code doesn't automatically mean the component mentioned in the code has failed. A component that isn't working doesn't automatically mean the component itself is bad. And even a visibly worn part may have another problem that caused it to fail.
We wrote about how proper diagnosis can help prevent unnecessary repairs, and when diagnosis actually isn't necessary.
