How Is Your Driveline?

If you're heading out to the lake, the job site, or hauling equipment this summer, pay attention to how your vehicle feels when you accelerate.

A vibration that gets worse at highway speed, a clunk when you shift into gear, or a shudder on acceleration are all signs your driveshaft may need attention. These symptoms don't fix themselves and they get worse over time.

Summer tire check: are your tires properly inflated?

Heat causes air pressure to increase, which means tires that were fine in May might be slightly over-inflated on a 35-degree July day. Overinflated tires wear in the centre of the tread, reduce your grip, and make for a rougher ride. Under-inflated tires wear the edges and increase fuel consumption.

Check your tire pressure when the vehicle has been sitting, not after driving. Your recommended PSI is on the sticker inside the driver's door. Takes two minutes and makes a real difference.

Q: My A/C is blowing air but it's not cold. What's going on?

A few things could cause this. The most common is low refrigerant, which can happen gradually over time or from a small leak in the system. It could also be a failing compressor, a blocked condenser, or an issue with the electrical controls. Some of these are simple fixes. Others take more digging.

AUTO TIP: July tip: heat is hard on your coolant system.

When temperatures climb, your engine works harder to stay at operating temperature. Check your coolant level when the engine is cold, and look for any signs of a leak around the hoses or reservoir. If your temperature gauge is running higher than usual or you're seeing steam, don't drive it. Pull over and call us.

Overheating is one of the most preventable causes of serious engine damage. A quick inspection costs a lot less than what comes next if you ignore it.

June Tire tip: don't wait until fall to think about your tires.

Summer is the season of road trips, gravel roads, and UV-baked pavement, and all of it puts wear on your rubber. Check your tread depth now and look for any cracking along the sidewalls. If your tires are getting close to 6 years old, it's worth having them inspected regardless of how the tread looks.

Tires are the only thing between you and the road. Treat them accordingly.
