Targa and the Sprongls - two legends.
Frank and Dan Sprongl are legends in Canadian motorsports and they have a long history with Targa Newfoundland.
The two principals of Four Star Motorsports both achieved the rare Grand Master status in the Canadian Association of Rally Sport for drivers and co-drivers respectively. They were inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2023 for their massive legacy in Canadian and North American rallying (including six Canadian Rally Championship titles).
Frank Sprongl and Rod Hendricksen were back-to-back winners in Targa’s Open division in 2008 and 2009 a 1983 Audi Quattro A2.
The Sprongls’ company in Georgetown, Ontario builds rally-winning cars. Four Star has earned six Canadian Rally Championships and four North American Rally Cup championships since 1991.
This year, five cars built and prepped by Four Star Motorsports competed in Targa Newfoundland including the three-time Targa 2 winning MINI of Spud Performance (it was originally built for Targa co-founder Doug Mepham).
During the 2026 event, Frank Sprongl flew in to fit a new clutch for the STI of SSS Rallysport, ensuring their car ran perfectly through the finish.
Sprongl built and prepped cars:
MINI Cooper S JCW - Targa 2 winner of Keir Pollard and Jeremy Boehner
Toyota GR Corolla - Targa 1 runner-up of Brett and John Hueston
Subaru WRX STI - Third place in Targa 2 with Garry Bimler and Pali Sudle
VW Golf R - Targa 2 - Lydia Thompson and Jake O’Gorman
Acura Integra - Targa 2 - Josh Collins and Steven Brewer
And a flashback from 2008 and 2009, the Targa winning Audi A2
