What documents do you need to import a car from Europe to the USA or Canada? Three, and that is the whole list.

Bill of sale. Proof you own the car and what you paid. Customs uses it to assess duty.
Original title or registration. The car’s identity document. A copy does not clear customs, so send the original to us early.
A valid government photo ID. Passport or driver’s licence, in the same name as the bill of sale.

Our team prepares the customs entry, the export clearance in Europe and the import paperwork on arrival, and we tell you if anything else applies to your car or your state.

Shipping a modern classic from Belgium to Canada: this 2010 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider sailed from Zeebrugge and is now home in Toronto, Ontario.

Pearl white over red leather, a 4.7-litre V8, and one of only around 500 Spiders ever built. A 2010 car cannot enter the US yet under the 25-Year Rule, but Canada’s 15-year rule opens the door, which is why Canadian buyers get first pick of cars like this one.

What actually happens when your car lands at a North American port.
Customs clearance for an imported car, in plain words.

Before the vessel arrives, the entry is filed. Bill of sale, title and vehicle details go in ahead of time, so the car is expected.

When the vessel docks, the car is discharged and held at the terminal until it is released. This is where paperwork errors cost days, so it is worth getting right the first time.

Duties and taxes are assessed and paid. In the US, cars over 25 years old skip the DOT and EPA conversion requirements. In Canada the threshold is 15 years.

Once released, the car is collected from the port and delivered to your door.

Check the 25-Year Rule by build date, not model year. Choose container over RORO for anything collectable. Price the crossing before you buy, not after.
